The ground they're on and their bases are sand glued on with PVC

then,
1. Primed black
2. Dry-brush a dark grey (non-GW)
3. Dry-brush a lighter shade of grey
4. Very light dry-brush of white

I did many, many trooper bases this way too.

Remember you can add white to black. And for terrain, I recommend going to cheaper art supply stores instead of using GW paints. $1 for something 4 times the size of GW pots (a lot poorer in quality of course).

It may just be practice, one of the guys I bump into now and then has drybrushed white onto chaos black bases that look really good.

I think it's probably a matter of several light drybrushings to achieve the right look.

My drybrushing was never great - I always felt I was wasting paint by wiping the brush on tissue and ended up with the brush too wet. Then I decided that even at GW prices, the paint was a lot cheaper than the minis, so why scrimp?

I do winter bases using the following method:

PVC sand or use Liquitex resin sand paste to get the texture.

Prime black

Drybrush Reaper Ancient Bone

Drybrush Reaper Polished Bone

Drubrush Skull white.

Basically, if you want white bases, that's what you do. For ashes, try using progressively lighter shades of grey. You could also apply patches of MIG Productions Concrete pigment to give a more *ashy* feel. Dust it on and then seal it, or alternatively paint it on with glue, which will give you a nice "caked" ash look.
