Mighty Gouge-Horn

Long time 40k player. Looking to start getting into Fantasy. I know the general rules as I have played one or two games under 8th using my friends army (Ogres). That said I am looking at what would be the best possible army to go with. I am not looking to get 2000 points in the next month, mainly would probably buy a battalion box or IoB and build from there, slowly but surely. Now the question is what army do you feel would best translate to my gaming style in 40k? In 40k the only real army I have played is IG, been playing it since 3rd ed, going through various different phases slowly from static gunline to mech to a hybrid between the two.

Things that are important to me:

$$-- Ideally I would prefer to not make much more than 2 battalion boxes investment to start off with.
Looks-- I am of the opinion that if you don't like your models you wont paint them.
Style of Play-- The easier the better, but I would prefer a more CC based army with magic or shooting as a secondary trait.

Not knowing what the armies fight like, the figures I like the most would be from the following armies:

High Elves
Beastmen
Skaven
Warriors of Chaos
Dwarfs

Any help would be very much so appreciated.

Thanks.

From your list I would choose warriors of chaos. They are close combat beasts with hardly any shooting (hellcannon, or marauder horsemen with spears or throwing axes), but can have some really good magic. They are also an elite army which could keep your model count down and therefore price. My next suggestion would be dwarfs.

dwarfs, wood elves, dark elves, bretonnians, WOC,
space wolves, orks, eldar

I would say WoC for CC, followed by Dwarves. But if you want some lulz, go for Skaven. There is nothing quite like them in 40k, and they are hilarious.

Also, they have some awesome models.

I have recently been diagnosed with swelling in the brain, so please excuse spelling mistakes and faulty sentences. I am losing my ability to type and talk effectively, but dammit, that is not going to stop me from trying.

I have seen WoC in action. Compared to them how would beastmen and dwafs play?

WoC would fit your playstyle, but there are a couple of problems with them.

1: alot, and i mean ALOT, of people play them.

2: some of the model range is abit static. Warrior models have practically no pose differences(not that it's a bad thing, ranking up is really easy compared to, say, Empire models)

3: there are some really nasty lists you can pull out of the book and is often frowned upon.

Ogres would fit your requirements. and seeing how you have had some expierience playing them they might be a nice start. you can get a good sized army out of 2 Battalions(convert a couple of Leadbeltchers into Characters and you have an instant 2k army with proper upgrades)

they also have a magical focus, unlike Dwarves. they have their own easy to use lore that they can really get some milage out of.

Dwarves are basically played 2 ways. Shooty and fighty.

with shooty you are spamming Thunderers as your Core, backed up by lots of warmachines and an Anvil of Doom. this build can get some flak for being really "beardy"

Fighty is basically loads of Warriors and Heros kitted out for smashing the enemy supported by some Warmachines. with your slow movement you are likely not the one charging, but that doesn't matter as you have pretty heavy armor and good WS.

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

High Elves-Hate Elves, one of the reasons I like my dwarfs, they drove the elves out of the old lands

Beastmen-Can't say much

Skaven-One of the most fun armies for both sides of the table, lots of blowing up of your own units

Warriors of Chaos-4pt maurader, MoT warriors, yes please. Lack shooting, though the hell cannon is a beast and a beast in close combat. However we have an escallation tourney right now at my local GW and all armies are represented once, except for WoC which has 3-4 players very cheesy.

Dwarfs-Love em, screw magic and you have a lot of defense against it. Our war machines are reliable and powerful with runes. Dwarfs IMO and Ogres have the most character of any other army in Fantasy. Great warmachines, a great battalion, you will use everything in it, BFSP sets on ebay still, so save some money there. Horde out warriors and take enough and you'll be throwing out 30 WS4, Str5 attacks, and in return they will have T4 and a armor save of 5+ so a hammer and anvil in one. Most armies get 1 dispel scroll, a rune of spell breaking is the same thing and you can take multiples of it, rune of balance you take an enemy power dice as a dispell dice, runesmiths and runelords automatically generate 1 or 2 dispell dice per character per enemy magic phase, no rolling for channeling and a +2 to dispel attempts just for being dwarfs.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd
