Hello all once again.

So i have yet some more questions.
Looking to pin some metal models and i was wondering on a pin vise i should buy and what bit is the safest to use 1/16 seems to big and was not going to use the ones ive seen from the gw hobby drill.
and second question should the part be pinned more than once or atleast 2 times?

thanks all,

Measure the material you're going to use to pin with, then choose the appropriate dril lbit.

i guess to better ask what would be a safe size looking for something like paper clip size i suppose something small smaller than 1/16 i havent seen smaller than that at hardware stores and hobby stores around here fail.

I use a 1/32 bit for small paper clips, 1/16 for large paper clips/brass pin/small magnets and a 1/8 bit for larger disc magnets.

I've got a question myself... When magnetising, is it necessary to have a pin vise? Couldn't I just use the drill bit by hand when drilling holes to pop the magnet in?

Thats what a pin vise is for, if you tried using it by hand, even with something around the smooth end of the bit, you'd struggle/get hand cramps cause you'd have to hold onto it very firmly.

I use a 1/18 in bit by itself. Then again, it's big enough to hold and I'm making pretty shallow holes. Also, I start with the 1/32 and then enlarge with the 1/16 before I start with the 1/18 bit.

GF9 makes one that is decent. Should be available at your FLGS,

I carry a basic pin vice, but probably only worth buying from me if you need magnets as well.

If you can find it at a local store, the Gale Force 9 one is very nice, especially if you are going to do a lot of pinning.

GW's new one is also nice, but (of course) at a price premium.

That's actually what I was going to suggest was getting it from you.

Thanks!

But it seems that by the time someone pays $8 plus $3 shipping, they'd be close to what they could buy one for locally.

Of course, I'm assuming the OP has a halfway decent game or model store within striking distance.

I use a Tamiya handi-drill for all of my pinning. Rand me $20, had my local hobby shop order it for me. Runs on 2 AA batteries, works just like a dremel but at lower rpms(no one needs to pin at 16000 rpm). Makes pinning and barrel drilling easier than pie. Also works great with dremel file tips for sanding edges.

I've heard mention of the Tamiya drill before, but never managed to locate one.

I agree though, even at the lowest setting I find the Dremel unmanageable for pinning purposes.
