I'm a new 40k player and I'm have about 1700 points of orks but can only field about 1500 now. I bought the AoBR set and speed painted (and dipped) the Marines (585pts). My step son (17) is interested in fielding an army, but he knows zero about the fluff. I obviously have a good start to a SM army that's painted and playable immediately. Cost is less of an issue than time spent painting. I like all the armies (orks the most, obviously) and he will unlikely be interested in painting them or maybe even playing them. So what I'm asking I guess is this: I'm starting a second army (second to orks). What do you suggest that would give a different gameplay experience. Take into account mainly that I will not field an unpainted army and my time is precious to me.

Inside that little light in your refridgerator

Personally, I would say CSMs or Eldar, both very elite armies to be the counterpart to the (I imagine) high model count of the orks.

Welcome! Welcome! i would start SM ( bcuz i love them and they kick-ass and they are cool and stuff )

you want the contrary of orks.. CSM or SM are good at that.. both elite and they have good armour (no orki armour) and they can fire a gun they're a bit weak in cc against cc armies but with an SM army you should be able to crush Tau eldar (dark), necrons a horde army like orks or nids is a bit harder but not impossible..

Hello and welcome to Dakka!

I'd say SM. easier learning curve to play with, and easier to paint to boot.

I'd actually say Tau or Necron. Both have relatively simple paint schemes, and both are more shooty and tactical than Orks.

GENERATION 8: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

Welcome to Dak Dak. If you already play a horde army then as others have suggested you'll need to pick a far more elite force. The model count is far less, as a result you can bash out a pretty sizeable force in little time.

Necrons are probably the highest point cost per standard model at the mo and simple to paint aswell, plus for beginners they are a nice easy army to learn and due to their current rules are quite forgiving if you make a mistake.

Somewhere close to 25'000pts
I lost count a few years back.

I suggest elite armies such as eldar, dark eldar and grey knights. All have a relatively low model count and require a lot more finesse then orks, so definitely some different playstyles.

Oh man. I'm sooooo stoked. I just got back from playing my first real game at Astral Games in Klamath Falls, OR. Normally this shop is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but when I called, the owner's wife answered and said that I could come in and shop. I was planning on buying a codex or two and whatever else struck my fancy... maybe a whole army. Who knew. I was shopping in the dark store by myself and the other owner came in and I re-introduced myself. He remembered me (sort of). I told him that I was looking for a pick up game and on his day off, he played me my first game. I think he let me win with his army choice (scary looking Chaos Demons) that he played differently from his normal style. The battle went as follows (as far as I can remember)

1500 points:

Roll - Dawn of War
Roll - Annihilation

Roll - I win and choose to go first.

I deployed a 2 mobs of 30 boyz both led by Nobs w/ PKs and BPs near opposite short edges. Attached to one, was a BM with a KFF. The rest of my force meanders on in their bunny slippers and coffee in their hands. There were 12 Lootas in a tight group - big mistake. There was another mob of 20 slugga boyz and a group of 9 boar boyz conversions (see my previous posts as they were conversions from WFB) led by a boar Nob and a boar mounted Warboss. No Enemies.
He deep strikes with some Sisters of Slaanesh or some such fast attack close combat crazies. There were 2 squads of 3 of these squigly things with a million flammer shots that came in right up in my KFF mob's grill. He can't assault (apparently) but I take 12+ unsaved wounds there. Another giant creepy six legged spider demon thing came in and dropped a blast template on my Lootas. 9 dead. They rout off the table edge. Great. I end up assaulting the giant creepy spidery thing with my un-assisted mob of 30. He EXPLODES from incredible rolls on my part and kills two other of his own Slaanesh fast attack chicks. He deep strikes some 2 groups of Plaugespreaders. They were tiny. One set was behind me and one was in cover across the battlefield. He reassured me that they weren't shooty. They weren't. Yay. Some nasty looking Greater Demon tried to deep strike... MISHAP... "back to reserves with thee!"

More fast attack nastiness on his part and flammer template squigly things lead to an annhilated 30 member ork mob, a dead BM w/ KFF and all my Razurbak (boar boyz conversions) as well as the Warboss Boar Rider. No more HQs on my team, but I basically exchanged that with 2 groups of Sla'anesh FA conversions (8 or so models each) and 2 groups of 3 flamey things. He tried another deepstrike with the Greater Demon. MISHAP... reserves. Then ANOTHER big creepy demon 6 legged walker thingy deepstrikes (-struck?) next to the soon to die BM led mob. Short lived again with incredible rolling with a PK wielding Nob.

Greater Demon finally makes it in on T4. Instant 4 wounds out of 5 with my full strength Rokkit equipped mob in assault range. All that was left was basically 2 full strength squads of Plague Spreaders. He fought it out. It ended at the top of T5.

I had a great day. The shop owner hung out with me all dang day on his day off. His wife gave me snacks. I was there for 6 hours. I bought 3 codicies (SWolves - a present for my bud in TX, Tau and Necron), a template pack and a shop T-Shirt. I just want to say that if you are in the area throw this guy or his partner in Medford, OR some business.

Thanks Astral Games!

HINT: I'm leaning Tau and Necron!!!!!

Played Tau- loved the models, loved the fluff, but somehow my playing Tau angered the dice gods I ended up selling them

I have a near-maxed out Necron army, and love them. I collected them for the look, and got a bit carried away. I'm still learning how to use them effectively

I also have a rockin' Waaagh, for those brain-free relaxing games..
