Ok, I'll admit I am a flaming noob, but how well do Drop Pod assaults(full list) work against Tyranid hordes?

Im not too familiar with it,but I can tell you that you need to maximize your shooting output big time for it to work against nids. It has a nice shock value for sure, in one turn having all those pods hit the ground and suddenly your loosing bodies like crazy. The problem is, the average SM weapon doesnt shoot THAT far, so if you dont make a big enough dent on your first try, you just landed within kill range of the Tyranids

Tyranids are going to come to you anyway, so dropping on them might not be advisable. It just puts them in HtH where they want to be sooner.

So deploy your army on the table and leave the pods empty in reserve. Then drop the pods in terrain chokepoints and other places where they'll slow the tyranid movement so that you can shoot them up before they reach you.

if your going drop pod assult i would be using dark angels with the deathwing. becouse terminators can be troops and come in like drop pod assult you can give them heavy flamers and typhoon missle launchers. tho if your using reguler mariens i would use 2 devistators with all missles then have anything elce drop in with flamers. that may work for getting a nice hole punched through but like king cracker said your in kill zone

Or, you use Black Templars, with the old 4th ed drop pod rules. While we can't get scoring terminators, ours can still get pods, and our pods are simply the best.

An entire drop pod army is fine...you can disembark behind your drop pods, using them as cover and giving you the drop on assaulting. As drop pods come with weapons, it gives you extra armored weapons that the nid player will have to contend with or simply allow to continue thinning his hordes. A friend of mine uses a 9 drop pod army BA, with rather good success. Its also a good way to deal with hive guard (who will be trying to hide in cover), zoanthropes (who will be hanging back) and generally causes disruption as most players are used to lining up and going toe to toe. But strategic placement of the drop pods are important, as well as choosing what comes in and what waits.

It is always good to have a backup plan for some of your units in drop pods, if you feel that it will not be worth it to have everyone dropped in a game it can be advisable to (for example) buy an extra transport for your longfangs if you're playing space wolves so you can transport the unit you don want rinding its drop pod that game. I dont know much about dark angels or black templar, but i know that space wolves make a great drop pod army...
