Hello,

I was wondering, how should I was a purple model, Badab Black seems to tone down the purple a lot, which I don't want, any suggestions? Perhaps a blue?

No matter the colour, a wash still has paint pigment in it, so it effects the underlying layer and generally mutes the colour.

Best bet if you want the vibrant colour you have already laid down and the shading of the wash, is to build your basecoat, apply you wash and then relayer your basecoat colour on.

As for the colour to use, try mixing in a 1:1 ratio, Leviathian purple and Badab black, see how that goes.

So wash after I basecoat instead of after I paint my lighter colors?

I think he means that you should basecoat, apply your wash and then touch up your basecoat to bring back the original colour.

I would suggest basecoating with a darker shade of purple (maybe a mix of your purple and a small amount of black), then layer your original purple over that and blend the two with a thin layer of wash.

but saying that, im probably not the best to give advice, I haven't experimented much with shading, Ive never had a problem with badab black, I just slap the wash on and jobs a good'n!

Currently this is what I am going to try.

I'll need to pick that up next time I'm at GW, thank you.

I think I am going to try Delvin Mud or Ogryn Flesh for the Bone Parts on the armor, Badab Black just murdered it.

Although maybe it is because the model had so thick of paint of it from being pre owned?

Dont be afraid to thin down your washes. a drop of dish soap will change the surface tension and help it flow into the crevices to provide better shading without darkening the color so much.

You could also use acryllic paint thinner which often has some kind of flowaid in it. But that is not as handily avaible as dish soap. And if you use too much, it might leave an undesired result. mix it on a GW palette's round spot in any case (or any other palette/tile), you'll see that the wash or ink will suddenly start to be only dark at the recesses and leave the middle mostly untouched. if it gets too bubbly, you've used too much.

Where could I get some Flowaid?

I will be using dish soap for now, but it would be good to know for the future.

I'm still very much a newbie to painting really but am painting my 1st army (orks) with a purple colour scheme.
How im painting my purples are, over a black undercoat, base coat with liche purple then 1st hightlight of 1:1 liche purple + warlock purple.
I then give it a wash of leviathan purple then when dry another highlight of 1:1 liche purple + warlock purple. After that i highlight pure warlock purple and depending on what im painting exactly small highlights of 1:1 warlock purple and bleached bone.
I personally use the vallejo alternative to liche purple, hexed lichen and bonewhite instead of bleached bone but as you seem to use GW i adapted it to that.

I think I'll try that on my scouts, Thats generally how I paint my salamanders, except with greens and a Thraka Green wash instead. Thanks for your advice, I appreciate it.

Add some dark blue to your purple and then make your wash. I believe this will turn out well..
