Something I've been wondering for a while now...

What are the rules for 'flyers' in standard games?

Or standard codex entries? (Ie the Dark Eldar Razorwing is a Skimmer/Vehicle)
like, how are you to know that they qualify as a flyer in Apoc/IA?

The reason you cannot find any rules for Flyers in standard 40K is painfully obvious.

It because there isn't any. Flyers cannot be used standard 40K.

When it comes to Apoc, you just have to work it out yourself.

ExarchCai - as above.

In Apocalypse you will find there are some dedicated Flyer rules; if you look in the Apocalypse book you should see the Nightwing fighter, Void Dragon transport / gunship, thunderhawks and so on.

There is a *rumoured* Flyers add-on to 40k supposed to hit this summer, which would hopefully allow use of flyers in "standard" 40k.

This is correct, the Apoc rule book has a section on rules for flyers, and also rules for AA vehicles. That is a reason why, at least in my opinion, flyers would be a bit OP until we have the ability to get some units with AA ability....I mean, right now the only faction with an AA unit in their codex is the IG with the Hydra. Everyone else would kinda be just open to being bombed to hell.

All Pintle mounted weapons are AA BUT pintle mounted weapons suck.

Certain vehicles, such as the Valkyrie, have noted in their entries (in IA or Apoc books) that they are a flyer in apocalypse. If you don't have a note like this for a vehicle then it's just a skimmer.

Hydra's don't have the AA rule in the codex (although they do have it in IA1 update). Marines can use the anti-air variant of the Whirlwind.

So, as you can see balancing the game could be as easy as making an FAQ stating that the Hydra has the AA Special Rule, and allowing the AA Whirlwind. Of course, this doesn't help the Eldar, Tau, 'Nids, or Dark Eldar much at all.

They'd have to make the IA RUles equal to the ones printed in the codex at the very least.

Okay, so if I was to use something in a standard game it would just count as a skimmer. Cheers guys, I know it was a stupid question, but I had to ask

Remember this is not a rule. You can't just take any flyer, spring it on you opponent and then say; "It just counts as a skimmer".

If you are to use anything from a source outside the rulebook/codex, you need to talk about it with your opponent anyway.

I was aware that if I was going to use anything not in the codex then it must be discussed first, that's just etiquette.

Not that I have any custom made models anyway xD besides, the models I was mainly referring to was the Razorwings, Void Bomber or Valkyries.

Since all those models have codex rules to acts as skimmers, they are skimmers. Of course, in Apocalypse if those units could be one of those flyers that can act as a flyer or a skimmer.
