How best to outfit a unit of Tyrant Guard, and how many do you take.
I have two tyrant guard now and am wondering if lash wips or a bone sword are worth it to take, or should i stick with just scything talons.

Assuming tyrant has lash whip and bonesword, then I would leave them as is. Reasons:

modelling - if WYSIWFG then guard don't look right with bonesword or lashwhip. Talons fit the model well. Also cost is quite expensive on what is already an expensive unit overall.

As tyrant is MC with lash then that deals the power hits and brings the enemy down to I1. Paroxysm will also help the unit as a whole.

Guard are mainly there to take the wounds. Also, rerolling 1s and having rending is still pretty good and will cause some problems.

It depends on how fast you pouce on your oponent, and if you have other models who can be back up charges. If the hive tyrant is attacking on his own then the guards will need lash whips to make shure he gets some killing done. But that asumes he will not eat to manay shots to the face, witch means a fast pace on your attack (genestealers and garagoyles and trygons oh my)

If you have a slow pacing army you need perhaps 3 tyrant guard with no upgrades to keep the costs down.

With a Swarmlord, i'd hit it!

With a Footrant, i'd add it if i got spare points (i guess?)

Thanks gang. I am running them with either a foot tyrant with just scything talons, or a w/ a swarmlord.

There's always the argument, that LW's is a compensation for Assault Grenades, even though it sucks to only achieve an equal footing in Ini-order, compared to the supeeeeerb A-'nades...

On the other hand, both your SwL and your Tyrant has Paroxysm - Don't even know why i didn't mention that in the previous post...

My head is full of f**k!

I took lash whips from my venomthropes (the bottom pair) and attached them to my hive guard after doing some careful trimming with clippers/hobby knife. It looks pretty good. I replaced the lower set of lash whips on the venomthropes with small tyranid talon arms from a hormagaunt. It looks great and they are all wysiwyg.

Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.
