Et In Arcadia Ego

In the 1980s, Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone produced a series of interactive novels called “gamebooks,” featuring a system called Fighting Fantasy. The popularity of these books would lead to the release of a role-playing game in 1989. Now, Cubicle 7 Entertainment is producing a new, updated and revised edition which will be called Advanced Fighting Fantasy RPG, scheduled to release in May 2011.
Designed as a fantasy RPG, Advanced Fighting Fantasy uses a streamlined game mechanic. This new edition features revised and re-written rules by Graham Bottley. The main rulebook will be a 200 page black & white softcover book with a suggested retail price of $29.99.
Two supporting books will release concurrently with the main rulebook:
Out of the Pit is a 128-page softcover detailing 250 monsters from the Fighting Fantasy world. This is a reprint of the book originally published in 1985. Written by Steve Jackson, Ian Livingstone, and Marc Gascoigne. Suggested retail price is $24.99.
Titan offers 128 pages of description and background of the fantasy setting for the Fighting Fantasy series. This is a reprint of the book originally published in 1986. Written by Steve Jackson, Ian Livingstone, and Marc Gascoigne. Suggested retail $24.99

Man, that's a blast from the past.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Myabe it's shallow, but I'm starting to expect more for my $30 than b&w line drawings on non-glossy paper. I've bought a lot of expensive, ugly books on the premise that I should only care about the crunch -- and been disappointed a lot of times (i.e., the rules aren't really that good and all I'm left with is an ugly book). Even the smaller RPG companies need to get serious about their production values. A great example is the Mouse Guard book: full color, gloss pages, hardcover with great jacket art. That book is a pleasure to own as well as to play.

I have Dungeoneer and Blacksand as well as Titan and Out of the Pit. They were great for what they were and like the simplest form of D&D. Played many games. $30 for a reprint is rather a lot IMO.

Used to have a good 40 of those, there were always TONs in charity shops and carboot sales, just needed to look for the bright green spines lol. They were boring to play but fun to read....
