A unit of four Tyranid Warriors plus a Tyranid Prime get blasted by a las/plas Razorback taking a lascannon wound and plasma wound. Plasma wound gets put on a normal Warrior and Prime takes the lascannon wound. From what I understood because of multiple toughness that makes the Prime T4 and he would be on the receiving end of instant death.

After checking the rules it says with multiple toughness when rolling to wound just use the majority. On instant death is said double toughness, didn't say if a unit with majority toughess takes a I.D wound on a model which wouldn't be normally killed by I.D would actually die.

We did a roll off and I took 4+ the Prime would be I.D'd, I lost and agreed to confirm on here.

So, if the Prime took a lascannon shot when in a unit of Warriors would be be I.D' because of multiple toughness or would it just take a wound because of the instant death rule?

Thanks

Majority toughness applies for wounding the squad. Instant death merely compares the S of the wound to the T of the model.

The two are not linked. So in this situation, you could put the S9 on the Prime and avoid Instant Deathing it.

Ok thanks. Couldn't find anything in the rulebook to back it up either.

Yep, as above. While working out how to wound the squad you use the individuals toughness, instant death is worked out on a per wound, per model basis.

The key thing to remember on the Instant Death rule is that it is really just a boolean check after a multiwound model takes a wound.

Is the strength of the weapon twice that of the model wound? If yes, it loses the rest of its wounds, if no continue as normal.

Page 26 under Instant Death, 2nd sentence; "If a model suffers an unsaved wound from an attack that has a Strength value of double its Toughness value or greater..." {emphasis mine}.
For instant death, it first must be an unsaved wound, and then you check the attack's strength against the model's toughness, not the unit it is in.
