This weekend I might show a good friend of mine how to play 40k, and I was wondering if anyone had a good set of "simplified" rules? Or at least had some good tips on a starting game, other than the obvious fact of REALLY small armies. I know GW has a set of simple rules for 40k with AOBR at the stores, but I have only read through them once or twice, and have completely forgotten them. Could anyone help me out?

Thanks!

Ignore terrain entirely. Just say which piece would give a cover save and that's about it. Rolling for Difficult terrain is always something I keep for game 2 or 3, never the first one.

try not to use any vehicles, special movement (such as JPs) and ignore more complex special rules (Rage and Furious charge namely, as well as some other ones like Swarm or Infiltrate, and especially Deepstrike). see if you can avoid taking any units with these rules and try to run only a game with 6 inch movement, roll to hit, to wound and saves for both the shooting phase and combat phase. That's about it.

Sounds good, my first game was 1500 points with everything, so I know how not-fun it can be. So it seems to be chaos versus tau then, since Eldar are just too complicated. So would 250 points would be a good limit? And what if I would need to put in Berzerkers, should I just leave out Furious Charge and play them like that anyway?

250 is probably too low. Try about 500 to start. Gives you a little bit of room to play around, but no biggie units/models

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I'd also ignore leadership values, pinning and the like. That all can be fairly confusing to a new player, especially with modifiers like combat resolution.

I dont know about leadership values, i feel that is a little too important for the game to get rid of. maybe not have modifiers due to combat resolution, if you lose its just a basic morale check. but not having pinning makes sense.

I use Morale checks in intro games, but only for close combat.

Also (just read through the thread) Furious charge should be used as a "surprise!" type of effect, to make his forces seem better than they were and give them a "ooh I get it now!" moment if they wonder why their men are outnumbered. Probably useful if you give him orks and he suddenly sees why they absolutely sucked at everything until they got into combat.

Really? You wish to make these rule even more simpler than they already are? Just roll a d6 at the start and whom ever has the highist score wins...too simple?
