I plan to start GK, and want boltgun metal to be my standard colour scheme. Obviously my army is going to be ridiculously shiny, but thats not the point. I was wondering what is needed to make army wide boltgun metal look good. Do you highlight with chainmail? does it need any little tricks, or just a chaos black undercoat? Do you use blue (cant remember official name) wash to make it look nicely tinted? If not, which wash? Or no wash?

And would a boltgun metal land raider look ridiculous?

I LOVE boltgun metal, and Im quite sure an infantry army if boltgun metal will look nothing short of impressive, but vehicles? how will they fare? Any experience?

Help appreciated.

I also love bolgun metal and almost every miniature I have ever painted has boltgun metal on it

when I paint bolgun metal, I do it on a back undercoat, after which I give it a black wash. After the wash dried, I highligh it with boltgun metal. I think it looks pretty nice and the wash reducess the shinyness

I'm not sure about vehicles though, but I guess you can look around on google

If anything, boltgun would be too dark for GK, in my opinion. I'd say use Mithril silver instead.

When I use Boltgun it depends on they type of look I want the armour to have overall if it's a main colour.

If it's normal then black under coat, boltgun with a black wash and highlighted boltgun.

Stuff like Orks I'll use a bit of Devlin Mud instead.

Stuff like Dark Elves I'll use 2-3 black washes and 2-3 blue. However I save the last wash of both colours until after it has been highlighted with boltgun again.

For metal I haven't really needed anything brighter than boltgun.

Boltgun metal is the perfect color.

- Paint the whole mini in Boltgun Metal
- hit the raised text, skulls, etc., in gold
- Paint the small stuff (scrolls, book, halberd handle, etc) in appropriate colors
- Wash the whole thing with thinned Badab Black wash
- Highlight (dry brush edges) with Mithril Silver
- Hit the eyes with red

I wish I had good picks of my old Grey Knight army. They looked awesome with the above steps.

I personally would use chainmail highlighted with mitheril and give it a heavy blue wash to get the blue steel effect. I've tried the above with boltgun metal instead of chainmail and it was too dark.

I recently bought 2 grey knight terminators at a tournament for $1.50 a pop. Painted them mithril silver and they look great. I agree, boltgun is probably too dark, unless you use it as an undercoat and highlight with mithril. That would probably work pretty well

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Paint the model entirely Mithril Silver or Chainmail.

Use Gryphonne Sepia over the parts you want to be gold(multiple, light washes will give a better effect for the gold).

Blue/Black/Green/Whatever can be applied to the rest of the model for different sheens on the armor.
