As far as the rules are concerned, no.

If you want to allow it, that's another matter entirely.

There are rumors that the SR will be available for normal chapters anyway but as it stands, no.

But if you house rule to allow it then its fine... personally I wouldn't mind.

You may want to remind him that if he is doing that, you may want to bring in things from other codex's as well. The game is designed to be played from your codex and not what you like from one codex and a few good things from other ones.

You could also ask him to give a good reason for why his army would have that model, he may just want to try it out.

Or, apparently, wait.

I have heard again about WD or somesuch allowing them soon.

At first I doubted it but why would they NOT try to sell them to every Space Marine player?

But not until then!

I usually don't allow this except when the codex states it is allowed (Daemonhunters/Witchunters) or when playing apocalypse. The reason is that I have seen too many instanced when players have allowed this and the combi-codex player picked the best units from two codexes just to produce an uber-killy list.

Pretty cheesy is you ask me.

However, if it is ONLY a single model, then I'd probably allow it. Depending on the player.

The other alternative, if you want to let him use a model he likes, is to allow both of you to use a second FOC. This will of course require you take an additional HQ and two troop choices if you do this. That has the advantage of including a few things from a different list, as well as keeping you from cherry picking a single elite, fast attack or heavy support choice. If you don't want the extra choices you can stick with a single FOC of your chosen army. Just make sure you keep the points limit the same or you may find armies with 4 troops, 6 elites, and 6 heavy support.

I'm gonna mirror what most people have said. As pure rules go, never. If you're playing a serious game, or a tournament, I don't think most would allow this. Otherwise, why couldn't my Imperial guardsmen have a unit of Harlequins supporting them?

Now for a friendly game, I see no issue as long as everyone is fine with the change. If he's reasonable, he'll say before the game, "Hey, I have such and such in my army from this codex. That cool?" Then you can decide if it's OK, and respond in kind for the future "Yeah, I put my Ogryns in this Land Raider". My own group includes a DE player who has a Vindicare assassin (from codex DH/WH, and the now defunct codex assassins), and I have no issue with it. Sure, I only field my Eldar, but if I wanted to throw in a unit from some other codex, he probably wouldn't care.

Let's all remember the most important rule: Have fun!

If only for fun , sure anything goes so why not?

If you are looking for "fairness and balance" absolutely no. Because most armies have some specific builds they excel at,
to be able to selectively pluck units out and combine... can be very over powered?

Sure, if I can take Eldrad, Azreal and an Apothacary in my squad of 30 Boyz. Seems like a fair trade!

Are you playing for fun? then sure, why not!

If you are play-testing or are in a tournament, then no.

Probably not , depend on the extent of the deviation really

for example i won't allow someone who field BA + CSM unit, because of well..... it's iffy. It's like saying My BA reclusiach have the mark of (insert chaos god here)

or saying that an Aurtach/Farseer is leading a group of fire warrior......

If it is genuinely "just for fun" then, sure. The problem then comes when someone does it for advantage (and huge advantage is certainly attainable) and takes offence at being told no.
