Hey, I was wondering if this (2e?) Hive Tyrant is too big to run as a Tyranid Prime. What do you think?
Size comparison is a Commissar, a SM, then the Tyrant

I'd say you are fine, and not the first person to use the old HT in place of the prime. You might think about putting it on a 40mm round base though for continuity with the other Warriors.

A lot of people use those for Primes. While they're described as being Tyranid Warrior leaders, there's nothing to stop you using that. Just make sure it's on a 40mm base.

Yes. The BRB generally assumes that you're using current-edition models though - it's not really designed to cover models which are several editions out of date. If you're using it as a counts-as somethign else anyway then putting it on a 40mm base shouldn't be too much of a chore.

Actually, it is. That's one of the big areas that 'use the base it came with' is designed to cover. No more people wondering if the terminators they've been fielding for fifteen years have to be pulled off their old bases and put on new ones.
However, in this case, since that's being used as to count as a tyranid prime, and not a hive tyrant, it needs to be on the base appropriate for a prime, 40mm in this case.

The 2nd edition Hive Tyrant is the same size as a Tyranid Warrior, so has the correct size:

My Tyranid Prime is on one of the 20+ 40mm bases I got with my Warriors and Raveners.
That base is faired into a 60mm base, because otherwise he tips forwards from the weight of his boneswords.
Thus I have violated the letter of the rules while adhering to their spirit, and violated their spirit while adhering to their letter.
