Subject: Can a single unit assault more than 1 unit causing a multi unit assault?
|
 |
Bounding Assault Marine
|
Scenario:
I have an iron clad dreadnought 2 inches away from about 3 auto-cannon imperial guard heavy weapon teams, 3 stands each.
Can I declare a multi unit assault with all units I can get into base contact with?
Do I have to only assault the closest stand to satisfy the closest to closest rule?
OR Can I go closest to closest, but since the Dread's base is so large it can contact 2 or more unit's bases, engage in a multi unit assault?
This came up in a tourney over the weekend, and I didn't push the envelope because I didn't want to cheat... much to melta having IG player's joy since I was only able to kill 1 unit per assault phase.

It is possible as per pg34 of BRB especially if its a large base aslong as its done correctly as per the assault rules, if the Dreads base then did touch 2 other bases of different units it would be classed as a multiple assault and worked out as normal.

Do they have to be equal distance apart so that when you go closest to closest you charge a straight line and catch two or does that have to be that precise?
If one is further away by let's say a half an inch, but still reachable.

As per assault rules, move to the closest model in the unit your assaulting by the shortest distance, so you cant go to the other side of the model with your dread to contact another enemy unit as that isnt by the shortest route, if it was like this tho (forgive my crap example).
A B
....C
A is the unit you want to assault, B is another model of a diff unit and C is your Dread, then move the shortest distance so a diagonal line by my example and with the size of the Dread base may contact both.

The first model moves the shortest distance to reach the base closest point of the assaulted unit.
i also believe that the BBB says that this model can not contact any other units. but i dont have time to look it up.

Userarm is incorrect.
The first model moved from the assaulting unit has to charge the target unit by the shortest distance possible. It is NOT able to charge multiple units at once. After the first is moved, any additional charging models are free to assault other units.
But, a unit of only 1 model is only ever able to assault 1 unit at a time.

As above.
You MUST assault 1 unit and 1 unit only when you move the first model. So a dread can only ever assault a single unit at a time.

My bad i misinterpreted that multiple assault section but live and learn, so 2+ models in a unit, first can only move in base to base with the enemy unit you want to assault but the second aslong as follows the usual assault rules may come in contact with an enemy of another unit and that would be allowed.

See, I know this is in the rules... but I've been playing with a lot of Dreads lately, and doing a LOT of assaults. I've come across a situation many times where my Dread could assault multiple units perfectly within the rules by assaulting 1 unit by the most direct route possible.
I was in a game the other day where I wanted to assault my friend's Tervigon with my Dread. The Tervigon had quite a few Gaunts around it. There was plenty of room for my Dread to assault the Tervigon, but if I went by the "shortest" path, my Dread would clearly be in B2B contact with both the Tervigon and the Gaunts.
We played it by forcing my Dread to move a tad so that he was no longer in B2B with the Gaunts.

The "shortest path" IS the one where you avoid making contact with two units, as you are not allowed to make contact with two units.

You played it absolutely correctly.
BRB p 34: "The model selected must be the closest one to the enemy (going around impassible terrain, friendly models, and enemy models in units not being assaulted)."
and, earlier on the same page: "This means that assaulting models... may not move into base contact with enemy models from a unit they are not assaulting."

You did play it correctly. Nothing in the assaulting rules lifts the restriction of staying 1 inch away from units are not assaulting. Even though it might look like a shorter path, it dosn't exist as an option simply because it was not legal.

Veldrain - the issue isnt being able to move within 1" of an enemy unit you are not assaulting, the issue is you cannot CONTACT an enemy unit you are not assaulting, when moving the first model.
So the shortest path you can take is the one that avoids contacting another unit.
