Scuttling Genestealer

Like the title says im an old tyranid player that came back to play but totaly disconnected!

The last time i played a solid tyranid force was way back when you could have an hormagaunt with rending claw and another one with synapse.... that says a lot!

I came back full blown with the new 5th. ed. rulebook plus the latest nids codex.
The nids have change dramaticly to what i was use to specialy in term of "genetic customisation".

So to all the nids or non-nids number crunshers pro outhere what would be the best 750 pt. tyranid force i could put togheter in order to "introduce" myself in the new local gaming community?

I have well over 10,000 point of tyranids ranging from winged tyrant with 2X scyting talons to walking tyrant with VC. 3 Tyrant guards, 9 2X scything talons winged warriors plus many more configurations (21 warriors overall). 4 Carnifex, nearly 300 gaunts 50% hormagaunt and 50% termagaunts. 36 genestealers, 12 raveners (6 2X talons, 6 with devourers), 32 gargoyles, 2-3 liktors..... name it i have it!

Eventualy i will go for a full 1750 force but for now i just want to get back in touch with the nids. I use to owned my old gamin store but back 3 years later i'm totaly lost!
Thanx for any feedback

This is true, a lot of the individual customization was lost, but the codex has such a huge variety of options for good, balanced, strong lists that haven't been around in previous editions.

There is no one best list. As I said before there is a huge variety. The biggest factor you have to take into account is that a Tyranid force needs to work together as a single unit (moreso than other armies). A Trygon is a great unit, but without support from the rest of the army, it's pretty easy to kill. Same goes for Hormagaunts. They are a great unit to have, but if they are your only fast unit without much support, they'll easily get wiped off the field before the rest of the army can help them out.

One thing that is always needed is ranged anti-transport. Nids have a hard time busting vehicles and we need shooting to do the damage. Use your ranged units to bust open transports and then use your CC elements to chomp on the chewy bits inside. If you are relying on assault to kill vehicles, you will have a very uphill battle (and nids already have a hard time against vehicles). Good thing Hive Guard, Thropes, Harpies, Tyrants, Carnifexes, and T-Fexes are in the dex. All of these can mess up light-medium armor and the T-Fex can put hurt on heavier vehicles.

Looks like you have an awesome base to go with. I'd definitely add some hive guard and zoans to the list. Trygons are goods and converting up Tervigons, Harpies, and T-fexes isn't bad either.

Eventualy i will go for a full 1750 force but for now i just want to get back in touch with the nids. I use to owned my old gamin store but back 3 years later i'm totaly lost!

What type of army are you looking for? Which units interest you the most?

Lictors and fexes have largely been nerfed (in the case of the Lictor, nerfed to hell). Winged Tyrant is pretty good. The Walking Tyrant though, maybe consider turning it into a Swarm Lord (a Hive Tyrant with 4 boneswords), which goes well with 3 Tyrant Guards (especially the old ones with lashwhips). However, run that at higher point costs due to it being a significant amount of your army.

Termagaunts, Hormagaunts with Toxin Sacs, and Gargoyles are extremely useful. Termagants because their cost is pretty low and you can use Tervigons (which you need to model yourself, which is possible to make from a Carnifex). To give them free Adrenal Gland and Toxin Sacs, as well as spawn more gaunts during the game. Hormagaunts, with tox sacs, can dish out a ridiculous amount of attacks that will chew through any non-vehicle model. Gargoyles are also good ambushers and their special rule can really put the hurt on people. Genestealers are also decently powerful. I prefer to run them bare naked in 20's, that way they can outflank and really screw with the enemy's day.

Some new units that are really good: Hive Guards (different from Tyrant Guards) and the Trygon. The Former has a stronger Autocannon, while the latter is a deepstriking carnifex with +2 wounds and rerolls to hit (but weaker in terms of strength).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do.

Higher is only good if they die. Majority WS makes Paroxism unnecessary otherwise (1TG+SL=WS9, 2TG+SL=WS5).

1 is almost always dead pre-cc, ymmv

Read up on how Fearless works, especially No Retreat wounds. Especially especially No Retreat wounds and multiple assaults. You will have to make every single move and attack based around this weakness in the army. If you do not immediate and crippling losses will result. Gone are the days of your monstrous creatures jumping into the fray and your little guys trying to drown them in bodies. The times, they have changed.

The fluff fails them in this regard.
Horridly, atrociously, and almost criminaly.
