Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I am new to the fantasy warhammer. I like the look and feel of the bretonnian army and want to start learning fantasty warhammer with them. I was just wondering if the units that come in the set are worth it. Are any of the units in the set used in competative lists? Would I be better off just getting units separately?

I don't play them, but if a Bret player isnt around to answer-
From what I've read the battalion is solid. This edition 'encourages' infantry so the men-at-arms are at least useful. And the archers got a boost from an FAQ about flaming arrows.
Also, for Bret knights they only need to be in ranks of 3, not 5.
It also seems you should plan on getting a trebuchet or 2 as well.

It seems that the mandatory items for Bretonnians are
1. Knights of the Realm
2. 6 Grail Knights
3. 2 Trebuchet
4. Archers
I have hoards of archers and knights from 6th Edition Fantasy (???) when Bretonnians and Lizardmen were the box set

Do not get the box set. The single Pegasus Knight is useless, Men at Arms are questionable at best, and the same goes for Achers. Best way to start Brettonians is with Knights, lots and lots of Knights. And Trebuchets are nice too.

Trebuchets are just killer (S5!!) but archers are great in this edition, too.
BS3 longbows for 6 points is so ridiculously cheap, make it 7 and they're skirmishers, too.
And men at arms (yeah, WS2, but still) with halberds, light armour and shield for 5 points, and with Ld8 paladins at just 60pt Bretonnians can now field a horde army with effective flanking cavalry.

BS3 for 6 points is cheap because in almost EVERY case they are at 5's or 6's to hit. Gobbo shooting is more effective per point. And a horde of M-a-A is a terrible idea.
Run knights in units of 6 and 9, Grail knights in 5x1 to maximize attacks and not have a model "not contributing".
Take pegasus knights, trebuchet, grail knights, kotr and ke's. Yeomen aren't too shabby if you just want to flank and have some fast cav.

You should check this guys battle reports on youtube, see what units he has. He seems to do well with his army layout.

Dice, measuring tape, and a Brettonia codex. 8th edition rulebook is recommended.

Well, Fantasy uses percents to determine.
There's a 25% minimum core, 25% maximum on heroes, 25% maximum on lords, a 50% maximum on special, and a maximum of 25% on rare.
So, for example, if I was to play 1,000 points, I would need to spend at least 250 points on core, and I can spend a maximum of 500 points on special, and 250 points on rares, lords and heroes. (Seperately, so I can have a 250 point lord, 250 point rare choice, and a 250 point hero)
Kind of hard to explain... hope this helps a bit.
And honestly the Battalion is a good buy. Just add some more knights, some Pegasus knights, beef up the Men at Arms to about 40 or so, and grab some heroes and a Trebuchet and you're golden.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

WFB doesn't have a unit number composition anymore.
The current rules are:
no more than 25% in lords including magic items etc
no more than 25% in heroes including magic items etc
minimum 25% core troops(magic banners and the like count towards that %)
max 50% in special units, no more than 3 of the same unit(except high elves)
no more than 25% in rare units, no more than 2 of the same unit(except high elves)
As Brets you generally want(in 2000+ point games) 1 or 2 lords, 1 knight and 1 enchantress. You MUST have a bsb which is a hero, and usually will take a lv2 wizard as well.
after that it's a personal choice on how many of each unit and how big you take them.
When I played Brets, at 2250 I took 2 units of 6 Knights errant, 3 units of 9 Knights of the Realm, 1 unit of 10-20 archers, 1 unit of pegasus knights, 1 unit of yeomen, 1 unit of grail knights and 1 trebuchet, more or less.

Thanks that does help. But lets say for a 750 pt game, what else would i need to add to the battalion so i can play small learning games?

give me 5 minutes and I'll write you a list for 750 points using as much of the battalion as possible.

Lord w/ Armor of Agilulf, lance, virtue of confidence
187 points
paladin, bsb, armor of fortune
109 points
8 knights of the realm w/ command, banner of swiftness
231 points
20 men at arms w/ command
127 points
16 bowmen
96 points
750 points on the nose.
All you would need to buy aside from the battalion are your 2 character models on regular horses. I recommend using parts from a Knights of the Realm box as you will need more of them anyway so the extras won't be wasted and it will cost
roughly the same as buying the metal character models.

As a unit they are decent. As single characters they have VERY specialized uses, mainly hunting war machines or single mages.
