Say some assault marines assault a squad of kroot. If some of the Kroot squad is more than 6 inches away from where the first model came into base contact with the enemy model.
Do they still join in on the assault?
Or are they out of the combat until the combat is resolved and they must join in or fall back.
Sorry if this is worded poorly I'm having difficulty understanding the assault phase.

with that said...in the scenario you have given, the kroot unit has 6 inches to move in order to get as many models into combat as possible. so if there are a few stragglers in the kroot squad it is possible to still have some models not take part in the combat but again they still have to move 6 inches towards the combat

Thanks!
Also do other units....say there was a fire warrior squad nearby, must they join in on the conflict since they are within 6 inches or is it just the unit being assaulted?

ONLY the unit(s) being assaulted join in. It is possible to have a unit do a dual charge (something like charging a 10 man guard squad but also getting a guy in base contact with a heavy weapon team). This would force both units to pile in as best they can.

ah a new player then?
as dkellyj has stated only the unit that is being charged gets to move the 6 inches to get into combat...your fire warriors that are near the combat dont join in unless they were also close enough to get charged by the same unit that started the charge which would be the exact same assualt marines.

Had a pile in quirk come up in a game recently, and was wondering if I played it right.
I had a Heavy Weapons team in cover. The team bases were each surrounded by models from my infantry squad. The forward most base was open on one side, as in it was not surrounded by models from a different squad. The enemy player assaulted this base with his Monstrous Creature.
For the counter charge move, my bases were stuck, and could not join in the combat, though their proximity gave them supporting attacks. The MC was only able to cause one wound, killing the base he was in contact with, my choice. When he wanted to make pile in moves I informed him that none were possible, and that combat was now over, incidentally the squad succeeded it's moral check.

If no pile in was possible then indeed, combat is now over.

Sounds correct, except you misused "heavy weapons team", which confused me for a minute. From the sounds of it you had a Heavy Weapons Squad in cover, and two of the Heavy Weapons Teams in that Squad were surrounded by other friendly models, but the third Team in the Squad was not.

This is wrong.
you follow assault rules.
move models that can reach enemy models into base to base. (moving your full 6 inches)
then move models that can reach within 2 inches of your models in base to base with enemy models. (moving your full 6 inches)
If you cannot do the above with your full 6 inch move then just maintain coherancy. you don't have to move 6 inches towads combat just within 2 inches of a model that already moved.
All of these moves require you keep coherancy.
on a side note I've been up against IG players that uses this to Their advantage. They spreads Their blob out so far that even after being assaulted they are able to daisy chain and still keep a protective bubble around other units/tanks and hold obectives...it takes a few turns to pull the blob all the way into combat all the while he is tarpitting the unit that assaulted.

mrdabba, it sounds like your IG player is ignoring the third paragraph of rules for pile-in moves.
According to paragraph two, the moves are done according to the assault phase requirements. But, paragraph three contains the additional stipulation that the models must move as close as possible to enemy models.
Edit: Aargh, I didn't notice that the thread titled "Pile in help" was mostly asking about Defender's React moves. Most of a bubble wrap unit could stay in place during the Defender's React move, but unless you've got a whole lot of bubble wrap you're going to get gaps from Pile In!.
