Hi everyone. In the backround section of dakka's 40k forums i've noticed alot of sm and csm threads but not many ork threads so heres what I would like to find out.

Whats an ork town like ? does it have places that orks sleep?, does it have bars and places for orks to eat?, are there ork houses? and other stuff like that.

Also I want to now what do orks do when they are not fighting, do they sleep?, do they need to eat?, do orks have markets? and other stuff like that.

Thanks guys, Please tell me what you think, It's an interesting topic and somthing to think about Imo.

Basically yes.

Orks towns grow around the drops (a communal latrine) and orks have houses, workshops for docs and meks, grogshops, markets, slave trading posts, pit fighting arenas, all sorts of things.

Yep. See if you can't sneak a peak at the [woops, wrong book]. It's got plenty of info and pictures covering ork cities and society.

[edit] Just took a look at my old source material, and "Waaargh the Orks" by Nigel Stillman and Bryan Ansell is the book I was thinking of.

Orks love ta fight, and when there is no common enemy, they will often fight between themselves. So you will probably expect lots of brawls daily in an ork town and perhaps a "paddock" where the kill kans lie dormant until battle.

Orks also like to race, enter face-eater squig contests, play musik, they also paint, usually wall paintings as well sculpt monuments, cast metal sculptures. Orks do a lot of things other than fighting, they just happen to like fighting quite a lot but they aren't as mindlessly violent as often portrayed.

I doubt that Orks would have the skill or the paitence to build a settlement.

Without typing out vast swathes of background, there are a few things common to Ork settlements but they come in all kinds imaginable. However...

Some Tribes live only a space hulks, others on ork worlds and yet others that live on alien held worlds.

The nature of the settlement depnds greatly on the environment within which it is built but generally orks will use the most durable local materials to build their own hovel, blockhouse or shack. Orks will tend to gather the biggest lumps of rock nearby to act as a foundation whilst gretchin and snotlings fill in the gaps with mud or clay. This is typical of any ork settlement.

These buildings can be one or more storeys high perhaps with a cellar. If the orks have captured buildings then they will adapt them to their own needs or if they have taken slaves from the local poulace get them to build houses as tribute.

In the older background the basic orkoid unit was the family and to all intents and purposes their is no need to change that now as it is quite conceivable that orks who clawed their way out of the groudn together and have lived and fought side by side since they were yoofs would continue to live in a kind of family.

Typically each household would build its own hovel right next to another household's hovel forming around a central courtyard with a gateway. In the courtyard are the drops and next to those are small cultivated areas where fungi are grown. These homesteads are also arranged in a rough circle or square pattern around the warlord or boss's homestead.

Often the courtyards are quite large and all sorts of entertainment can be put on for the amusement or the orks.

Around the settlement will be various workshops for the Mekboyz which can form a shanty town where all sorts of things get tinkered with and built. The main focus however will be the warlord's stronghold.

Yup your right man. They figured out how to build Gargants and Stompas and the like, they can (in there own way) travel around the galaxy with ease, doks can put boyz back together after being blown up, build things like the SAG. But building a settlement is just far to complex of a thought

Imagine a shanty town for combat, every building has a gun every gun has a building - also orks psychic powers help "if we paint it black it will stop missiles" and magically it happens - I simply don't get why they don't take over the universe those lovable green giants

Agreed. Racing is easily the 3rd biggest things Orks do. Its fighting, drinking fungus beer, and then racing.
