hi, i just got into warhammer because my son started a war of the ring army and i needed something to play with as well :-) and i am building my space wolves and i caught a snag that i cant untangle, the thing is, i LOVE!!! the thunderwolves and i am thinking of ordering the great looking figures from mr dandy, but when i try to figure out hte rules for movement i get stuck, when i try to google it everyone seems to obviously agree that the have a range of 18-24 inches, which i don't understand, when i read the rulebook it states that a cavalry can assault up to 12" thats the 6" plus D6" i figure, where does the extra 12" come from? it probably something stupidly simple i just missed but could someone please explain it to me.
really appricate the help
cheers Björn

40k has a different movement system than LotR. Each Unit is allowed a normal movement (normally 6 inches), a "Run" distance in lieu of shooting or charging, and a "Assault" move. Assault is basically the same as normal movement, whereas Run requires you to roll a single D6, and that's all the extra movement you get for that turn.
Cavalry are somewhat different. They are considered a type of assault specialist (certainly the case with TWCs) so they charge 12 inches instead of 6. They also have Fleet, meaning they can perform a Run move AND still Charge. This means that, if you dont run, you can reach an enemy 18 inches away (6 inch normal Move + 12 inch Charge Move). If you do elect to run (and thus not being able to shoot) you can reach an enemy that's 19-24 inches away (so basically the above, with a 1-6 bonus inches due to the Run Dice roll). People tend to shorten it to a single number, to give a general idea of what's the effective range of the unit at the beginning of it's turn (thus, if you were going up against it, you know how far you should stay out of it's range to avoid being charged, and when you're in the "danger" zone).

Also remember that thunderwolves have "fleet" which allows them to charge after running, while normal units cannot charge if they make a run move. im not sure if fleet allows them to shoot tho, afraid I dont have a rulebook nearby.

Fleet only allows you to charge after running. It still doesnt let you shoot. However Tyranids and Imperial Guard both have a special version (in the case of Tyranids, it's a psychic power called Onslaught. Guards have a order the name of which escapes me) that allows them to shoot and run. However both versions do not let them assault (so, it's a shooting version of fleet).
