Alright, my CCC Squad is complete!

So here are the three models I'd not yet finished painting.

Assault Medic

Incinerator

Sniper

The team shot.

I'll be working on my USCR team next. Got some US ODGreen for the base colour, then the plan is to block in the other areas and wash them down with my personal 'magic wash'. Progress as it is done!

I have a couple of the MERCS figures.

What's the game rules like? I'm a bit loathe to splurge out over £20 without a decent review.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Too bad you didn't download the free PDF of them before the hardcover came up. If you want to get the quickstart they're still available on the MERCs forum in the beta area.

Played on a 2x3' board with dense terrain. No LOS to the other edge from the short side deployment zones.

Squad building is simple; each faction has 6 figures. You may deploy 5 in your squad with no duplication. Each player has a squad.

Turn sequence is unique as well. During the Initiiative step you roll a D10 for every model in your Squad. Models activate highest to lowest initiative on the board (mixed turn sequence for both sides!) In the case of a tie compare Reaction stats.

Movement is done in 'Cards'. Models may move from one divet to any other divet in the card each move. They may then snap to cover for free if the distace is 30mm or less (one base).

Each model may choose from a list of generic orders when it activates. Some, like move are straightforward (move your SPD in Cards). Combat means you can use one of your weapons. Charge is SPD in Cards plus Melee. Pretty simple. Its when you get to the Combat Class Maneuvers (unique orders) and Advanced Combat Maneuvers (less simple orders like Overwatch, Bound and Suppresive fire) that the game gets reallly interesting.

Book has a number of scenarios and is full colour and very pretty. All four factions from the book are currently supported, and a fifth for the first supplement has just been announced.

All in all a neat game. It's a 'kitchen table'style skirmish. So, I recommend it.

Great looking team, Achilles. The amount of painting I have to do to get another 2000-2500 point fantasy army online has me really craving skirmish sci fi again, and MERCs looks to fit the bill, beating out Infinity for scale and price. Deal breaker will be if I can find anybody to play locally ...

Thanks for the mini review. Something I'm curious about, does the game use dice? Besides the D10 for initiative? Maybe I should track down the trial rules

Your minis look great!

I have a Kemvar team that I'm working on, albeit slowly.

Game uses D10s for everything; shooting....courage, etc.

Lots of fun Advanced rules too. Best of luck!

Hilariously D10s are the only dice I don't have a bunch of ... But I bought the full rules, and while I haven't read it it's certainly a beautiful book. And looks like there are 2-3 skirmish game types who have played it or have models and are happy to bust them out from time to time. So looks like I'm MERCing up in the near future

How does MERCS beat Infinity in terms of "scale"? Do you mean model scale, or game scale?

Man down, Man down....

I'd argue they're different types of game.

MERCS maxes a five models in a team. All teams have six models to choose from.

It is super skirmish. Infinity can have powered suits, vehicles and remotes in addition to infantry models. MERCS is just infantry for now. Table size is much smaller; 2x3'. Scenery is the same. It's a kitchen table game.

Price wise the games are similar, though MERCs caps a six figs for a given faction.

Enjoy!

Yea, I meant number of models per side. The Infinity lists I've been just about to buy are @ 250 points, which is about 13 Nomad models (each at $$$). But I'm sure that you can make some much much more elite forces, when you factor in TAGs and various heavy armored infantry, than LI / MI Nomads
