I remember that painting my army (badly) was the best thing in the world and I didn't want to do anything else. Now, painting occasionally feels like a chore and a necessity I don't always enjoy. Now I only get intense pleasure from painting a new model: if I've had it for a while, I just don't care about painting it. And I'm a guy who got into the hobby FOR the painting...

Also, Mr. Mystery-there's a difference between those three?

I vaguely remember looking through a brochure that my step-brother had. he used to play Orks in the late 90's. And all i remember seeing were Eldar war walkers and thinking they looked awesome. A few years later i decided to start up 40k and chose Eldar just because i remember how cool i thought the walkers were lol

6 years on.... still no war walkers

I'm more or less in ChocolateGork's former position. I'm not able to get out to the FLGS, so I'm just slowly painting and trawling Dakka. I feel like I'm way more involved about the hobby than with the hobby. For now...

I had so much about it and seen it played so much by my friends, as well as playing the space hulk video game, Final Liberation, and Dawn Of War before I started actually getting models, and reading WD long before I started playing, so it was pretty natural to me. I just hopped right in I guess. When I got my first army actually painted I was pretty stoked and spent 2 weeks aching over the list for my first game. It was pretty dumb in retrospect, everything was massively upgraded, I was so proud of how elite I had made all of my units. I was not proud of how badly they got smashed.

Currently going through that with Malifaux, I just love the fluff, especially behind seamus, the dreamer & coppelius.

Seamus - Walks into a house of ill-repute. Kills everyone & ressurects them as a zombie hooker army.

The dreamer - Has a friend named "Lord chompy bits" who proceeds to play "tag" with people, guess how well that ends.

Coppelius - aka mini cthulu, He convinces people that they can't trust their eyes, so they should claw them out, give them to coppelius & then flay themselves to death.

Trade rules: lower rep trades ships 1st. - I ship within 2 business days, if it will be longer I will contact you & explain. - I will NOT lie on customs forms, it's a felony, do not ask me to mark sales as "gifts". Free shipping applies to contiguous US states.

I remember opening the second edition box set and being absolutely thrilled. Two armies, Cardboard ruins three full size books complete with army lists for all factions! I spent hours reading and rereading those books.

I had already been reading every GW brochure (anyone remember the blue and green army pamphlets.) I could get my hands on, and had borrowed the RT compendium from a friend, but until that box, I only owned one space marine.

I've had alot of fun in the hobby since then, but with the possibly exception of the Necromunda box set, nothing else in gaming has quite replicated that experience.

I remember having a real tough time deciding between Tau and IG. SM didn't really appeal to me as my friend said they were the butt of veteran gamer jokes and just bulky steroided men.
I then started sifting through all the WD magazines and found out IG have the best tanks.
I never looked back since.

Saw adverts in Dragon Magazine for 40K back in the day before the game was released. I had already played Warhammer and the figs just looked cool as hell. Got my copy of Rogue Trader the day it came out and a week later had a box of Marines. The rest is history.

I remember sitting at my coffee table with my buddy who had just purchased two of the 3rd edition box sets and looking at all the pieces inside the boxes trying to figure out all the possible combinations one could make.
He Gave me all the Dark Eldar minis and one of the rule books just so he could have someone to play against.
I read that BBB every chance I got and worked on army list like I was trying to discover the cure to some dread disease.
I purchased, assembled and painted minis like a man possessed, wanting nothing more than to have a complete battle ready army.
Those were the days....

I remember back in 1993, a friend had brought some Terminators and genestealers into school, and taht inspired me to gout and get this 40K game he was talking baout (2nd Edition then) I loved the Red guys on the cover, and so I read the book that had the same cover image first (the Codex Imperialis) which was a great choice, as it was a concentrated collection of almost entirely 'fluff.' I loved reading about the structure of the Imperium with the High Lords of Terra, and tehn later, the stuff on the Space Marines being formed.

Here e aare 17 years later, and I can still remember cracking open that book, and stealing my uncles AirFix grey primer to paint the Space Marines, Goffs and all those damn Monopose Gretchin that came in the box that night.

If I remember right, it was 20 Goffs, 40 Gretchin and two SM Tactical squads with Missile Launchers & Flamers.

Oh god, how could I forget the Cardboard dread o' doom.

And yeah, the press and fold scenery ruins were pretty decent for the time. Especially when you consider the whole box only cost 35 quid back then.

I thought the same thing about the buildings in Mordhiem when I picked up a copy when it was first released, what a great game...everything you needed in one box for under $50 dollars.

Never played Blood bowl or Necromunda,BFG was a lot of fun though,I have to admit I miss the "boxed game" era.
BFG,GorkaMorka and Mordheim all saw a lot of love amongst my friends.

GorkaMorka flopped hard for my group 9though I did like the Orky Glyph guide in Da Uvver Book, gave me some great Warboss names.

I'd recommend Blood Bowl to anyone. And if you don't want to purchase it, I believe the Livign Rulebook is still buried somewhere in GW's site, and I know they used to be a play be email tool that could be modified to be a single PC playing client on the computer. I used it for dry run strategies back in the day. My Yvresse Towers (High elf) and Everpeak Redbeards (Dwarf) teams were rightly feared and could beat anybody in our leagues except for the Undead teams. My High Elves were helped by being the only real agility team whilst everybody else was running Strength teams (Orcs, Chaos Warriors, Chaos Dwarfs, Regular Dwarfs...)

Definitely remember that. I had been a devout M:tG player, and the store I played at carried WHFB and 40K. I was interested in WHFB more than anything, but could only talk anyone into playing 40K. I split the 3rd Ed starter with my brother, I took the Dark Eldar, and he took the space marines. In a night I blew through the 20 DE Warriors in a horrible blue and black color scheme with bits of sprue still stuck to them. Then came the learning. Lots of missed rules (armor piercing didn't come into play until about 7-8 games in.) I kept losing, and figured I needed more troops because they weren't of quite the same quality of a basic Space Marine. Wound up with about 100 warriors, 1 raider, no other vehicles, and an assortment of things such as Scourges and a Talos. Plus one of each special character....

Kinda miss that whole newness thing, now that I know to plan out and playtest before buying, can remember the stats and special rules of most armies, build lists in my head, and other nonsense.

My fondest memories were the Eye of Terror Campaign when the Tau faction and Chaos joined forces to conquer the Campaign. Oh the days going online and communicating with people the world over. Getting my Tau Army and allies and going to the Game story and going with our faction's instructions to win our weekly games.

We listened to our Commanders Such as:

The RED CHAIR and Tau Marshal and their subordinates for what week to attack in mass and listen to the ideas that was bantering about.

We all painted our armies as best as we can because it meant something to us. We were doing something new and because we were the Tau, and those days in my area, the Tau were such an overlooked army.

I remember the last week of that campaign when 10 thousand points of Xenos successfully held off 15 thousand points of imperial might at a local GW store. There was "ahem" additional reinforcements for the Imperial Side. Someone showed up late and bought in 4 Imperial War Hounds on a short edge of the 20 foot long game board.

And they ran into my 9 Broadsides Battle suits. At the end of the day my army consisted of one wounded Broadside, 7 fire warriors and one gun drone, but all of the War hounds were destroyed. My partner next to me had 2000 points of Khorne and my section of the board that we held was a bloody mess of carnage.

The game was over. We went online to tell our allies our victory before heading out for dinner and drinks. The type of gaming, the camaraderie of the players is something that I will always remember, that newness of something different and so much fun.

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.

1st edition Space Hulk, The mood, minatures, artwork & atmoshere it created just took my imagination away and raped it! (still shows today as my DIY sm chapter look a bit like dark angels, green power armor & bone terminaters with lots of robes & my large collection of genestealers) Then I realised that space hulk was just a small part of a much bigger world and the rest they say is history

"Brothers! I have seen the future and it is grim. We shall still be fighting our fallen brothers 10,000 years from now, but we shall not be remembered. All records of us will be lost and forgotten, all knowleage of our existence denied and our name classed as heracy! We shall lose our home and spend eternety drifting through space as vengeful spectres, smiting any enermy of mankind foolish enough to stand in our way. Let these facts fuel your hate! Show no fear, show no mercy and show no remorse! We are death incarnate! We are fury given form! We are the brothers of the 2nd legion!" Primarch of the 2nd addressing his troops on the steps of the emperor's palace just before the siege during the horus heracy.
