Does anyone else think that shooting through other models to hit something else should have a chance of wounding them, too? In many cases, shooting through other units or models doesn't really do much. Sure the targets get a nice cover save, but many times the cover save isn't really even advantageous for the owner of the target, since many models' armor saves are 4+ or better. This added save really only benefits Ork and Eldar players, and maybe some Guard stuff. This especially claws at my side when a guy can just shoot through his own units as if they weren't there. In reality that wouldn't be the case, as the chances of simply killing your own guys are pretty high! (I know this game is not at all based in reality, but still...)

Collateral Damage:
I propose that, when shooting through other models, a roll of 1 hits the models in the way instead. Rolls to wound are done normally. This rule would not apply to Ordnance weapons.

Discuss.

So you have to line up all of your models or the enemy gets a coversave or you shoot yourself?
Don't think of it as everyone all shoots and moves at the same time.
The individuals in a squad may shoot then move, the rules are an abstraction of the game.

That being said, it makes sense that the guardsmen standing in from of the tank you're shooting at should get hit occasionally.
How about whenever your opponent gets a cover save because you're shooting through their units, the units giving the cover are hit every time the unit behind passes the cover save?

Ex nihilo

Absolutely.

As a tyranid player, I'm even of the opinion that you should be able to shoot into combats. So what If I kill my own guys as well?

It fits both Tyranid fluff and would maybe even aid survivability.

So yeah, go nuts.
Unfortunately, any additional rules you come up with are house rules. The upshot is, you could even say that 1/18th of the shots fired at that tank are riccochets, and that many shots go into the closest unit that the angle would be appropriate for.

Tyranids attract more tang than an astronaut convention.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I just think that the rule would make sense, and even force players to think more about movement and tactics, which I think could make the game more interesting.
