Subject: SM Raven Guard Drop Pod List
|
 |
Stalwart Space Marine
|
Hello Dakka!!
I have been playing 40k for a while now and I just wanted to share my Raven Guard Drop Pod list.
I am pretty happy with this list however it is only 1765 Points so I was looking for a little advice on
what to include to bump it up to 1850 or 2000 Points.
Anyway this is what I have.
Shrike – 195 Points
10 Marines w/ flamer, rl, and dp 205 Points
10 Marines w/ flamer, rl, and dp 205 Points
10 Marines w/ mg, rl, and dp 210 Points
Dreadnought w/ mm, hf, and dp 150 Points
Dreadnought w/ mm, hf, and dp 150 Points
Venerable Dreadnought w/ a pc or a ac, a hf, and a dp 220 Points
Assault Squad w/ pf 215 Points
Assault Squad w/ pf 215 Points
Total 1765 Points
Basically what I do is send one assault squad to infiltrate with shrike and the dreadnoughts
come in to blow stuff up and cause lots of confusion before everything else comes in.
So any advice is welcome although I would like to point out that this is not
Supposed to be a crazy WAAC list so…
For the extra Points I was thinking maybe a librarian or chaplain or even some Sterngaurd with a
drop pod but then I would have to drop one of my precious dreadnoughts
Also if I went with a librarian or a chaplain I would have to lose a couple Points to make a 1850 point list.
Anyway thanks for any help.

I would look into trying Vanguard Vets unit for Shrike to role with, as well as a chaplin to go with them as
well.

Bronze Knights 1500pts. |

Why not try and fit a sternguard in there. They really can help with your game.
Oh, and trade out at least one squad for TH/SS termies. When you infiltrate 8-10 fleeting TH/SS termies, it's enough to send someone onto renal failure.

Flamers on the Assault Squads, maybe? Have you also considered CCW scouts? With Shrike, they can also charge turn 1. Plus if the have a teleport homer and somehow survived, the can call reinforcement termies!

Well I really dont like useing Shrike just to infiltrate some cc termies (most of the time)
even though it is very..."very" effective.
scouts is a good idea plus it fits into the fluff of the army and it would help the survivability
of all to have two squads infiltrating.
As for vangaurd veterans I had this Idea and I wanted to know your guys opinion of it:
Because Vangaurd can assault after deepstrike I was thinking of putting a locator beacon on
some dps and then comeing in within 6 in so they dont scatter befor hopefully assulting
now what I wanted to know is that if shrike is in the army they are fleet so... do you guys think i
could run them before assaut? I am pretty sure they can still shoot so I think running is also valid.
Also do you guys think if a chaplain ds with them they could still use thier special rule to assult?
Anyway as for sterngaurd I really have nothing against them exept for the fact that they are a elite
choice. Which means to get a sterngaurd squad I would have to drop a dreadnought! I love my
dreadnoughts. idk it is definetly a good idea so i will have to try it out.
For 2000 point games I will prolly add either a libby or a chaplin depending on who I am up against
they lib will mostly be to stop other psychers and the chaplian would just be with a squad of assault
Marines or the vanguard vets.

You forgo shooting and or running with Heroic Intervention rule. Page 62 of the Space Marine codex. Also, the squad loses the ability entirely if you attach an independent character. Sorry, man.

Well, a cool Idea would be to get Lysander and 10x TH/SS Termies (paint them all as imperial fists) to represent a combined chapter force. Use shrikes chapter tactics (fleet). Attatch shrike and Lysander to the 10x TH/SS terms and infiltrate them forward and wreak havoc. Should be very fun and competitive as well.
Drop a 10x assault squad for this. Adding Lysander and termies makes it 1950pts. Either drop 100pts for 1850 or add 50pts (2x Pfists on tacticals) for 2k.

lol
I will do this but prolly not for as my main list.
to bad about the vanguard special rule Prolly should ave checked my dex
I'll still try em out but idk I will have to see.
I was thinking of switching the ven dread for a squad of 5 sterngaurd with a dp
and combi meltas and getting a chaplain which totals to 1845 and i guess i could give the chaplain
melta bombs...any thoughts on this?
A (off topic) note on my ven dread. His record is surviving 5 games in a row after drop podding to
take down the greatest threat. he has lived through 6 IG melta guns to his face, He has
come out on top against a 7 man nob squad with all pfs and a warboss, and he took down a wolf
lord on thunderwolf cav a land raider and the guys with melta bombs inside during a single
game. (admitadly he had no arms left but hey )
this was mostly due to him instant killing stuff and also my opponents poor rerolls on the damage
table.
It might help to note that last game he was killed by 5 guardsmen with a single MG...

I run both Vanguard, with LC/SS, and Termies with Shrike both are valid. Remember Shrike can roll in a LRC with 7 ATerminators and a counts as Cassius and outflank. Infiltrate confers outflank and although you cannot infiltrate in a dedicated you CAN outflank, nasty little trick.

Chance of BS 4 Melta Destroying Venerable Dread : 14.24%
Chance of BS 4 Melta Destroying Vanilla Dread : 28.22%
http://www.simhammer.com
For back line fire support dreads, such as the rifleman dread or the LC/ ML dread, the Venerable is not worth your 60 points.
If your going to be dropping them and firing with MM and then assaulting, there is a strong argument to be made for them --- especially with extra armor.
PPS : The simulator assumes rolls of 1-4 on the damage table are acceptable. On 5 and 6, it uses the venerable reroll ability. As you can see, the venerable dread is 2* as likely to survive a MG hit.

Ignoring the TH&SS option (which is one of the major reasons Shrike is good) I would still try and capitalize on Shrikes fleet USR as much as possible. As such I would not take more tacticals than absolutly necessary. 2 Tacticals will still let you drop 3 pods first turn. Get som CCW scouts instead.
So while staying close to what you already have maybe get something like this?
Shrike = 195
Libby (Jump pack+NullZone+Avenger) = 125
Troops
10xTacticals (MG+CombiMG) = 185
Pod = 35
10xTacticals (MG+CombiMG) = 185
Pod = 35
5xCCW scouts (PF+Combi-Melta) = 100
LSS (HF) = 60
Elites
Dread (MM/HF) = 115
Pod = 35
Dread (MM/HF) = 115
Pod = 35
Dread (AC/HF) = 125
Pod = 35
FA;
10xASM (PF+2xFlamer) = 235
10xASM (PF+2xFlamer) = 235

this is a great trick however if I really wantd to outflank with a bunch of terminators I would get
Ko'sarro Khan who lets the entire army outflank then I would load up 3 LRC's or LRR's with terminators and
drive around killing everyone.
not saying this is a bad idea. It is just not the way I want to play RG.
A Iron clad is a possibility but I checked on simhammer (tyvm labmouse) and apparently the ven dread is more
survivable.
@ tedurur I like your Idea however I would try it with and without the LSS in exchange for more cc scouts since
they can infiltrate anyway and may get a first turn charge.
thanks for all the help guys I now have alot of stuff to try out so I should prolly go get a game

Ironclad is cool because it comes with extra armor and move through cover, and has better weapon loadouts (2x DCCW, 1+ on damage table, HF, Meltagun, 2x Hunter killers) and is unique to the codex.

Don't scouts get a scout move?
You put them 18.1" away from an enemy.
Scout move them 6"
Move 6"
Fleet 1-6"
Assault 6"
Am I missing anything there?
Thats how Shrike scouts can assault first turn.

It's very situational owns blobs does ok vs mech. I played a 1000 point game today vs an ork kan wall with 2 8 men and one fully loaded scout squad. Thats not bad for 12 PW and 69 s4 attacks if you go first would probably outflank them if going 2nd. Won the game as the rest of my points went to AT, 2 2x AC dread, 1 1x LC DCCW dread and Shrike which popped the kans. Shrike actually killed a kan that assaulted him after he helped a scout squad mop up one of the mobs, gogo rending! Took the LC, DCCW variant over another ACx2 in case you run into a landraider at 1000 but I don't think this list would fly vs MEQ.

What you can do is switch to CCW scouts, turn normal dreads into Ironclads or Mortis Dreads, add flamers to your assault squad, and/or add assault terminators. Lots of choices, but you can't take them all.
