So, recently I've been on a quite a kick about Warmachine, trying to figure out what faction to start as it seems about ready to get off the ground in my area. It's been quite a challenge, as the elemental affinity of the 4 factions in the prime book (don't know a great deal about Retribution) seems to successfully imbue each of the factions with an interesting and distinct playstyle. So, I've been checking out the units of the various factions, and I came across a unit that seemed to reach out of the screen and slap me in the face, saying "play this!"

That unit? The Withershadow Combine;

For the life of me, I can't explain what I find so appealing about this unit: true, the models are great, and the rules seem to be the combination of tricky and powerful that I find appealing, but that seems to be something that Warmchine has in spades. But this is the unit that sealed the deal for me, and convinced me that the forces of the Dragonfather are the way for me.

So, anyone else have a unit/model/background story that sold you on a faction, or else just made you say "Gotta get it!"?

Broadsides Bart and the Mariner.

He has a gun called Ace, and it's up his sleeve. And he's a pirate.

Mariners have anchors, a diving helmet, and a ship's cannon that carry in their arm.

Yowza.

When time was still young and I was starting to look into Warmachine around the time of Escalation it was this one that made the impact. Widowmaker kapitan, here painted by cyril, which is still among my favorites of the WM figs.

Later the when the Hordes was published the Titan Gladiator pushed me over the edge to get collecting Skorne.

That's truly stupendous! Totally different from the typical color scheme and yet completely fitting... the kind of painting that makes me want to be a better painter.

It was the Carnivean that got it for me. The thing has no eyes, but it has two massive oven mi... er, claws, that it uses to rip things into pieces. Or throw them around like rag dolls. Or a number of other cruel things. Dragonspawn = win.

Plus, the entire command staff of the Legion is female, minus Thaggy himself.

I had always pretty meh on the whole steampunk thing. Considering that the various WM factions are Russian Steampunk, Electric Steampunk, Jihad Steampunk and undead Steampunk, the aesthetic of the game in general simply didn't appeal and the various Hordes factions never appealed either, then I saw these guys:

It was the withershadow combine for me, too. The moment i saw them, I knew I had to have them in an army.

I then stayed for Ol Rowdy and eStryker.

I must say though, Pig guy with 'jack arms is also a bit appealing.

I have quite a few Legion figures, even though I play Trolls. Everblight makes far too interesting of creatures.

It was the Necrotech and Scrap Thrall that drew me in. Zombies with powerfists FTW!

pGaspy and Withershadow were why I started playing Warmachine.

I had several units that I was like OMG those guys are figging awsome, Venethrax, Death Jack and Nightmare. Those three alone were enough to get me to build a Cryx army, after those guys I found so many other cool models in the army that just made it even better.

No, never play an entire faction/army just because of one figure or unit.

However, I have several minis that are pretty much just for display because I had to have them, even though I would never use them in a game.

Whats my game?
Warmachine (Cygnar)
10/15mm mecha
Song of Blades & Heroes
Blackwater Gulch
X wing
Open to other games too

I play Trollbloods because the first Hordes pic I ever saw was the art of the Dire Troll Blitzer. Saw that, laughed my ass off for a few minutes, and said "SOLD!"

For Hordes, the models that came with the original Circle starter influenced my choice of faction.
For Warmachine, the models that came with the original Khador starter influenced my choice of faction.

Actually for Warmachine I played a couple other factions too because of models:

Cryx - ESkarre
Menoth - The Harbinger
Cygnar - Finn
