Last week, I posted a thread in YMTK about Karanak. For those that don't know, on page 55 of the Deamons codex it states;

"Karanak is always fielded with a unit of Flesh Hounds, picked as a normal Elites choice. Karanak is simply an upgrade character for this unit"

Normally, Flesh Hounds of Khorne are a fast Attack Unit.

The question was, is this a Typing error? Or is Karanak Hound of Vengence an Elite choice? Or does he make the unit including him an Elite choice??

As nobody could provide a definitive answer, I emailed GW. The answer, from one Kieran Swift, was "Thanks for e-mailing in, yes if you take Karanak then that unit of Flesh Hounds becomes an elite choice for the army. I hope this answers your question."

So, now we know
If you doubt the veracity of this claim, PM me your email and I'll forward it to you...

Even less reason to take Hounds of Khorne then eh? Especially when Elites is populated by fantastic units such as Bloodcrushers and Fiends. Still, its good to know I suppose!

Wow, that is total crap. Yeah, not much reason to take Fleshhounds now at all: give me my seekers instead. Faster, more attacks, and they all have rending. Seems a no-brainer at this point. Fail GW, fail. And the codex is going to be weakened already due to Grey Knights coming out...

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Lol, Grey Knights (with their ward save ignoring weapons) are already around.

I've played against a WAAC player using the old Grey Knights book with my Daemons. Not too afraid of them. I know they had invul-ignoring weapons, but my Daemons were able to make an absolute mess of them before. The new stuff...yuck

Well, it's not like anyone forces you to take Karanak!!

I agree there are better elite choices than hounds, even ones that can Move Through Cover. I suppose in a mono Khorne list you might feel a large unit of Hounds is preferable to a smaller unit of Blood Crushers (they are considerably cheaper...but obviously for a reason) or if you wanted to "spam" hounds and fill up your FA and one elite slot with them.

Why would you do that?? Who knows? Maybe you like dogs....

I don't doubt the veracity of your claim in the least, but you do know that when you email GW customer service, the response you are getting is the opinion of the GW customer service rep. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it isn't like an official answer from the games designers, especially since its not like you can take this ruling to a tournament and wave the printed version of the email around at the tournament judge (as they have no idea if you just created the print-out yourself or not).

So regardless of what the GW customer service rep says or not the answer is still:

The rules aren't clear so discuss it with your opponent before the game.

If you and your opponent are happy with the customer service rep's opinion, then that's all good! But if not, again, his opinion is not any kind of 'official' response that carries any kind of weight.
