I've decided to paint my Empire Knightly Orders as the Order of the Gold Lion, which has black and white plumage on helmets etc... I'm a bit unsure about how best to go about the white feathers - darker basecoat then highlight, lighter base, shade and highlight, or a different approach... I'd appreciate any advice on a good way to get this done, and I'm sure the answer will be found here (always has before!!)

I'd suggest a base of Bubonic Brown, highlighted with Bleached Bone, then finally with Skull White.

When I paint white, I usually first paint it with AstroGrey and highlight it up to white. Looks something like this:
