There is a rhino 1" away from a Deathwing squad.
There is a squad of infantry 4" away from a Deathwing squad, in cover.
How does the difficult terrain test work in this case? If the rhino is declared as the primary target there's no terrain to move through, but the squad in cover requires a terrain test to be assaulted.
If the distance for the test is less than 4" needed to make it to the squad, can the Terminators all move in against the rhino?

If any of the models will have to pass through difficult terrain to make the assault, everyone tests.
If the Rhino is your primary target, but no one technically will have to pass through the terrain to get to it, the way I usually see it played is that the assaultin player may choose to roll DT anyway, to give himself the option of entering terrain and getting a multiassault.
Yes, if you rolled too short a distance to reach the second unit everyone could assault the Rhino- actually they'd be forced to per the assault rules.

Mannahnin is correct if your difficult terrain test doesnt reach the second target everyone moves into the primary target. And yes you have to test for difficult if you want to try to make assault to the squad in the terrain.

You can be forced to roll the DT test, as you must attempt to reach an unengaged enemy models base if possible.

Of course, Nos, but remember we're talking about reaching a second unit, in a situation where they can get to the first unit (the declared assault target) without going through terrain with any of the models.
Which is bit unusual (usually if two units are close enough to multiassault and terrain is in the way for one of them, it's present for either), but possible.

Mann - the rules dont make a distinction; you are required to reach an unengaged enemies base it possible. THis means you can be forced to assault a unit in cover if your models can reach those models, but not reach the initial enemy unit assaulted.

What? Really? What if my declared target is in DT, 5" away, and I roll 4" but another enemy unit is out in the open 3" in the opposite direction? Are you advocating that my unit has to go assault the other unit because it's in reach?

No, because the assault has failed - you cant do the first step of the assault, which is moving the first model into base to base.
THe next steps no longer reference the initial unit assaulted, but tell you you must move into base with an unengaged model if you can - so that COULD force you to try a DT test, which if failed may make the initial assault fail.

The rules for assaulting multiple units are optional.
As usual the closest attacking model must be moved to contact the closest model in the enemy unit against which the assault was declared. Then remaining models can assault models belonging to other enemy units, as long as they keep following the rules for moving assaulting models.
All of the rules in the previous passage are mandatory, as they use the word "must" repeatedly. Nothing forces you to assault multiple enemy units.
To the OP, just remember that if you roll double 1's for your DT test you won't be able to assault either unit.

I agree with somerandomdude that assaulting into a second (or third, etc.) unit seems clearly to be optional, not mandatory. I agree about the DT test when we're talking about additional unengaged models in the declared assault target unit, but if you have no interest in engaging a second or third enemy unit, I see nothing in the rules compelling you to attempt doing so.

I (and everyone around my area) have been playing that "not within an inch" meant "Not an inch." Had someone try to tell me that they could assault on double ones at last year's 'Ard Boyz ( TO couldn't be bothered) but not show me where it said that after I told them my stance. I gave up on the argument.
I turned the page and my eyes locked onto just the right spot, so it appears you are correct. My mistake.
Of course, if you can get your models to be exactly an inch away (no more and no less, I'm bring a micrometer) then congratulations to you! j/k
Classes were canceled today so I'm glad I got to learn something!

You cant get your models to exactly an inch - you HAVE to be more than 1" away.

Not true, you cannot move within an inch, page 11.
Double 1's allow assault from an inch, page 36.

That's how I've been playing for 2 years. However, I had glossed over the following passage (page 36, Assaulting Through Cover):
Note that if a model stopped 1" away from the enemy in the Movement or Shooting phase, it can Assault even if its unit rolls a double 1 on its difficult terrain test.
Does this statement mean nothing?
I think it's obvious that GW has poor wording throughout their rules, and the use of the phrase "may not move within 1"" doesn't really clear anything up. One inch away is "within 1", but the Assault rules say you can be 1" away.

Yup. There's a contradiction there, because for all other purposes in 40k, 1" away = within 1".
I saw that when I first read 5th, and couldn't find it again at a tournament a few months ago. Thought had imagined it. Thanks for pointing it out.

It's simple enough, if you have sufficient movement to have been closer, to inform your opponent that 'these' models are stopping exactly 1" away from the enemy unit in question. Stop 1" clear - a millimetre one way or the other won't matter. The BRB defines exactly 1" away as 'within 1"' - anyone who is going to ask you to re-measure at this point deserves a slap.

Ran into this today I just tell my opponent I am using my movement to get within an inch and eyeball it as close as possible.
Also, I do not think you are compelled to multi-assault the assault rules are written in the context of a single unit but I can see a reading that would imply you have to reach as many models as possible in as many units as possible.
