Hey,

This is probably done over and over again.
However, in my local gaming club, they are removing Lord of the Rings.
(Think 40 % sale).
So I was wondering, are LOTR stuff useful for making Rough Riders?

Thanks,
Loner

Hi Loner,

Unfortunately the LOTR range of models produced by GW are actually closer to true 28mm rather than the heroic 28mm of 40K models.

This means that any horses you get your hands on may well be a little too small to use with Guardsmen, although I haven't seen anybody actually try this.

It also means that if you wanted to use the Rough Riders in any GW events you wouldn't be able to, as they have a policy of not allowing you to use LOTR parts to convert your 40K or WHFB miniatures. This is because it contravenes their license agreement with New Line Cinema.

Probably the best horses to use for Rough Riders are the Empire Pistoliers, but I guess you were looking for a cheaper way to do this?

I had a spare few Riders of Rohan from my LOTR battle company days and used them to build some riders. Indeed they are a little too small for the riders-the legs make them look like they may be related to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec-. but they're alright for regular gaming-if you ignore the titchy legs.

That's too bad.
I was thinking about using cold ones, (around 25 eur) but when I was in the shop, I noticed the sale on the LOTR products. (around 25 too, but you get more horses.)
Thus I thought it would be smart to ask on Dakka before buying any of the horses/beasts.
Which cold ones would you advice? The Cold ones from Dark elves or from lizardmen?
I was thinking about using the original dark elves legs if possible.

DE cold ones, all the way, dont use the DE, too skinny and not guard enough, with simply knee repostioning, requiring a candle and a deft hand, you can simply bend it. Or you could cut it off and reposition, filling the gap with GS. This would look good for a sergeant IMO: http://www.bitsandkits.co.uk/catachan-command-body-c-p-4443.html . You dont need to buy the whole set, use bits websites

How about the Wargs? Are they still too small?

Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess.

LotR scale is smaller than warhammer so most things would look tiny to a guardsmen (even 28mm historicals would be larger than lotr)

Wrags? I'm sorry but I cannot find any and don't know what you mean...
I also looked at the Wood elf Glade Riders, too small? http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440115a&prodId=prod800868
Also, maybe funny, to use the spiders from forest goblins? http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440079a&prodId=prod840899
I prefer the Old ones more, but I can use the parts from wood elves better in my Guard army...
(Still, I need 15 Rough riders, so I can probably use both...)

wargs are nicely sized models and legs arent attached to the warg itself so you could convert up wargs. also warriors of rohirim and orcs with scavenged guns and such make excellent conscripts and penal legionaries.

LOTR is too small.
It would more look like pony riders rather then rough riders.
Although the idea of killing orks by just using ponys is deffinatly fun.
I think I'm going with the cold ones.
Any advice on those?
