Greetings,

I'd have posted in an old thread which was someway related but it was 2 years old plus even the forum warning told me to open a new one so here we are:

Regular IG FOC rules say that you must have 1 HQ and 2 troops.

Given thah the IG codex says "Each infantry Platoon counts as a single troops choice on the FOC when deploying" and such platoon is at least composed of 1 PCS, 2-5 infantry squads (and others not relevant to the question since optional), does it mean that a legal IG army should field at least:
- 1 HQ
- 2PCS + 4 infantry squads aka 2 Troop choices
?

It looks like the PCS is mandatory for one single troop choice so since you need two according to the FOC you would have to field 2 PCS total (minimum).

That said, I see many lists here on the forum that do not include the 2PCS (which is 60 pt without any upgrade) and field just 1 or more HQ and infantry squads (mainly veterans) without the PCS. While 60pt may be nothing in high point games, it still means an extra ligth tank..

Maybe I'm just missing something obvious but please bear patience.

Regards

Veterans are also a Troop choice, and come in a single squad rather than as a platoon, so have no PCS.

You can choose to just take Vets for troops rather than platoons.

The PCS is, indeed, mandatory for an infantry platoon. Every one must have them.

That said, infantry platoons are not your only troops choice (cf. veterans). Troops choices which are not infantry platoons do not require PCSs. Thus, it is very possible to make an overall legal guard list without a single one of them.

Greetings,

thank you, I knew I was missing the obvious! So basically it's mandatory if I want an Infantry Platoon which is a troop choice but if I take a Veteran squad which is also a troop choice, it's not.

Many thanks, regards.

PS: answers were really fast, cheers!

Like the others said, think of an Infantry Platoon as a miniature FOC in and of itself. Just like how your need an HQ and 2 Troops choices in a standard FOC, you will need a PCS and 2 IS in an IG platoon. Once you have that, you can start buying extras.

Ditto everyone thus far.

Imperial Guard has 3 troops choices - The Platoon, Veterans, or Penal Legionnaires. Any combination of these 3 entities (with the Platoon having 1 PCS, 2-5 Infantry, 0-5 HWS, 0-2(?) SWS each), can fill your 2-6 troops choices in the FOC.
