So I've been working on Steel Legion for my Guard army, and to keep things fluffy, they're gonna have some armor. However, their scheme looks kinda tough to replicate without an airbrush. Here's some examples:

I was reading through Codex: Armageddon, and it had the following for painting these vehicles:
- Black undercoat
- Heavy drybrush of Fortress Grey
- Rotting Flesh stripes
- Fortress Grey/Rotting Flesh drybrush on the edges to blend
- Final white drybrush over everything

Before I get myself a couple tanks and some pots of Rotting Flesh (gross as that sounds) I'd like some advice from other people who try this scheme. I heard Rotting Flesh is a really weak color and won't show up well, especially over black. However, over grey it might be alright. Anyway, some advice would be appreciated!

Rotting Flesh is one of the better "pale" shades of GW paint. Kommando Khaki and Desert Yellow are rubbish. You should be fine with it IMO, it will work well. Do you have a really big brush?

I have a good sized brush, yeah. Thanks for the reply - was hoping somebody would get back to me!

Break off a piece of blister foam or spare case foam. Paint on a guide line and then sponge. Actually you probably wont need a guide line for the thicker bands. Different colours here but I think it would work for the above. Sponged on camo pattern.

If you airbrush on fortress grey, the colour you get is much lighter than the ones you see in the codex.

The best colour base for armageddon vehicles I've seen is adeptus battlegrey basecoat and a codex grey drybrush.

Bleached bone works better than Rotting Flesh for the ash waste stripes too I've found.
