Hello all, I'd like to ask a few questions about Rage. For the purpose of this post, let's assume we're talking about a unit of multiple models, such as Death Company.
When dealing with a unit with Rage, what exactly does it mean to "move towards" the closest visible enemy? Would having the closest model to the enemy unit move directly towards them be enough, while the rest of the unit fans out or even goes in opposite directions?
To put it another way, do we consider the established "footprint" of the Rage unit when doing the moves, or does each individual model have to move directly towards the enemy? If so, that would cause them to bunch into a large blast formation, because all of their paths would angle towards one model (since only one enemy model could realistically be the "closest" to the Rage unit).
Let's say I have a Rage infantry unit in between two enemy units (a Landspeeder on one side 8" away and a Tactical Squad on the other 9" away), can I move towards both? As long as the unit "footprint" gets as close as possible to the Landspeeder, can I spread out?
Since Rage only limits where I consolidate in the Assault phase, can I then choose to assault ONLY the Tactical Squad, even though they were not the original unit I Raged towards?
If I have a unit of Death Company with Dante attached, can I choose to Hit & Run and move in any direction I want? Hit & Run isn't a consolidation move, but people have told me it can't be done (they have to Hit & Run and stay next to the squad they're with).
I think it should be possible to spread out during the move with Rage units, so long as you move the closest model to the enemy towards the closest enemy unit, and maintain coherency. I understand there is no use of the phrase "unit footprint" in the rules, although the rules for cover and shooting through gaps certainly supports the same thing, but the other way of looking at it (the unit is just a group of models and no more) can cause problems (like the blast formation I mentioned above).
I know that "spirit of the rules" and "cinematic gaming" is not something that people like in rules discussions, but I'd say that, with the exception of the Hit & Run question, all of those "make sense". If one model is closer to the Tactical Squad than the Landspeeder, that's all he is going to see.
Thoughts?
