Hello there! I am starting to consider taking scar-veterans in my saurus blocks to try and give them some extra punch, and I'm wondering what some of your favorite builds are. I have designed two builds to far:
Build #1: 133 points
Shield
Armour of Fortune
Venom of the Firefly Frog

Build #2: 135 points
Light Armor
Enchanted Shield
Dawnstone
Sword of Striking

I designed build #1 for mainly surviving challenges, and I designed build #2 for challenges too but also to be able to hit a bit harder than build #1. I would appreciate any feedback as well as your ideas for other builds. Thanks!

A Scar Vet can do fine with just Light Armour and a Great Weapon (you strike last in most cases anyway), Cold One optional if you are running a Saurus Cav bus. When you start putting too many magic items on them they become less efficient very quickly, I dropped my 2 Scar Vets from my 2400pt list and was able to fit in two small Skrox units for almost the same cost. The Krox hits as hard as the Scar Vet + you get the Skinks attacks + shooting and they are another unit (which can redirect, help with deployment and give you another banner for Blood and Glory).

I usually run my Scar Vet with the Armour of Fortune and a Great Weapon. As Powerguy said, Great Weapons on Scar-Vets and Oldbloods are nasty. With T5 and decent armour, they have a good chance of surviving and the Great Weapon hits back at S7! I've found that's more than enough hurt and it is super cheap to just buy a Great Weapon, as I believe a Scar-Vet with Light Armour and a Great Weapon comes in at 98pts, with an impressive statline. That being said, some of my favorite magic weapons are the Pirahna Blade, Sword of Bloodshed, Sword of the Hornet, and Sword of Striking.

The Burning Blade has served me well; S5 is usually enough to reliably wound, so the additional -2 to armour is quite efficient, and flaming attacks add a little something to the unit.
With that, an Enchanted Shield or the like would work well. Scar-vets are expensive enough that I generally want just a few, and to protect that investment a little.

Build 1 is illegal due to two magic armours.
That said, i like these builds:
1. Light armour, shield, Dragonhelm and sword of Chotec – Used to bolster TG units who are guarding a lifeslaan by providing flame resistance and a counter for the ABomb/Hydra who go for slaan units like homing missiles.
2. Cold one, Halberd, Gambler's Armour and carnosaur pendant – For those rare cases when you decide to run a Cold one Cav unit this guy will add some extra attacks (high S to boot).
3. GW, light armour, enchanted shield and firefly venom – Cheap(ish) Saurus unit bolstering.
4–5. Shield, Gambler's Armour and Sword of the Hornet – Enchanted Shield, Light armour and Sword of Swift Slaying – A dinamic duo of ASF fighters for the times you just have to hit 1st.

Not sure the e-shield plus GW is worth it - if he's in a big enough unit then he shouldnt be taking armour saves until close combat, when he then won't be using the shield anyway.

For protecting a light slaan then adding either the ASF sword or the WS10 swords are good - means you dont need both Birona AND Speed off to hit first with rerolls, some of the time.

Oh yeah I see your point with the first build Hover. I thought that since a model can have both a suit of armor and shield that the same would apply for magic ones as well. Good thing you caught this here or else my Lizard would have an illegal 1+ armor save lol. I fixed the build so now he just has a 2+ save

Played against a burning blade, charmed shield, cold one combo. There may have been other items, but those were the ones notable to me. It let the guy sit in a foot unit and not get cannon sniped on the first crack. Seemed like decent utility too- speedy and choppy enough to battle chaff units on his own.

Yeah, I am running 2 in my TG 2 in my HW&S and one in my spears. I just march the three blocks down the board and when I can hit combat I try to get Savage, Pan's and Wyssan's off. That way my Scar Vets are have 7 S8 attacks and are T8 as well. The unit with Wyssan's has 2 scar vets with 7 S9 attacks and T9! It is great when they all go off! At 93 pts a piece the models are all sorts of win! They have a 3+AS and a 6+WS in combat.

General thread question: Why are you buying ASF weapons instead of the I10 one? Unless you run LoLight and plan to increase your I to 10 using that, is it really going to be more effective having ASF at I3 than having straight I10? Considering that you're going to have lower or the same initiative than most models you're likely to come across, ASF won't be piling the re-rolls on, and any other ASF troops will have higher initiative.

It's not often you'll meet other I10 models, and models with ASF would likely be striking before you anyway...

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I thought ASF vs ASF you struck at the same time now, not back down to init order?

I know init order reversion was 7th ed....

Yes ASF sword means i get to hit together with other ASF troops regardless of Init values, thus the ASF sword is good in that i will never hit after others and will usually hity before them, while at I10 i still hit after ASF.
