In the rulebook under "template" on page 29 it says that it must not be touching friendly models. Does this mean if you cannot find a way to use the template without hitting an ally then the shot counts as a miss?

You can't fire it at all if there's no way to place the template without covering part of a friendly model's base.

And, because this is the inevitable follow up question every time this gets posted:

Q: If a model fires a template weapon out of a vehicle, will
the vehicle be hit if it is underneath the template? (p66)

A: No it will not be hit.

Even if scattering onto shooting unit (legally possible)?

Template weapons don't scatter.

Blast markers cannot be placed so as to cover any friendly models or any models in HtH, but the rules explicitly state that they can scatter there.

Scattering is fine, if you have one of the few template weapons that can scatter.

If you can keep your head, while all about you are losing their's, then you have probably completely misunderstood the situation!

Not to go offtopic, but... what template weapons can scatter? I don't think I know of any, but I'm not that well read on codexii I don't play.

I was covering myself . I know some vehicles can 'fire' templates, but not having faced any, not sure on scattering.

About the scattering template thingy... It might all be reduced to interlanguage mistake, I was talking about area effect (3", 5", 7"...) weapons, because round pie plate/s are also called "templates".
My question was if, for example, a vindicator could be hit by its own shot if it scattered back onto the vehicle.

The Ork codex calls them blast templates. I actually won an argument with GWAR because of that one. Just sayin

Yes it can happen. I once shot a boomgun at a rather close MC, and it scattered back and blew itself up. I laughed until I cried

I call shenanigans. One does not win an argument with Gwar. Gwar simply decides to abandon a thread to avert his eyes from your wrongfulness, which some choose to interpret as "wins".

Ill go through all my posts to prove you he conceded. Even GWAR couldnt argue with black and white on pg 48 under BigBomm in the Ork dex. Game. Set. Match.

I think it was something about a pretty major arguement with a mod that resulted in a (IIRC) temporary ban.
He never came back after that.

If I use -><- I'm not mocking you, it's a reflex from using the " silly" icon on every other forum.
However, if I use this -><- I might just mock you.

While we don't discuss specifics of disciplinary action taken against individual posters, I should point out that posters don't get suspended permanently just for arguing with the mods. We're not quite that shallow.

Meanwhile, since the question has been answered, and this appears to have wandered way off topic, I think it's time to move along.
