I for one would be attracted to smaller tournaments if they offered a different format. The whole three games at 1500 or 1750 crammed in six hours with three winners winning swag is not vary appealing to me.
What changes would dakka like to see in these types of tournaments?
I think having prizes for everybody would be cooler than a "grand prize" e.g 30% off for the day of the tourney if you played and paid the entry.
Add a nominal fee for all you can eat food and beverage. Two games max with emphasis on points earned while fighting each game. Like you can go for tableing your opponent, or suffer the least casualties, or captured the most objectives. This would then be used to tally who won overall as well as who won both games, etc. etc.

If you would be interested in a tournament like that you should considering running it.
I personally would have very little interest in it, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be successful.

That's not a bad idea for an event.
You should check out a Snake Eyes Gaming event ( http://snakeyesgaming.blogspot.com/) at Legions in Pittsburgh or Gatehouse Games in Altoona. I know it's a bit of a drive for you but I'm sure you'd have a great time. We often give out plenty of different prizes (like the Snake Eyes worst dice award or the Claim a Skull for the Skull Throne award) in addition to having a random door prize or two and awarding the top players. Our next event will be held at Legions Games in Pittsburgh on Saturday March 26th.

Mike at Showcase Comics in Philly tends to cook up some chili or the like for tournament participants. Somewhat more random prizes sounds like a good idea as well, especially the bad dice award Deathwolf describes

Store forums at www.showcasecomicsandgames.com
Registration for larger events at www.BigGunz-NE.com
Stuff like Dakkacon gets organized in small obscure corners of the DCM Mosh pit.)
I'm going to be putting up all the events for the next 6 months soon, I was waiting to see the 'Ardboyz schedule and make sure we didn't get two events on one day.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

Last tournament I ran had four "first place" prizes. One for last Undefeated Player, one for Most Victory Points Earned, one for Fastest Victory, and one for Best Painted. Though granted with the number of people who showed up it still only ran three rounds and took about six hours if you include the lunch break. Every tournament I run has a number of random door prizes such that about half of the people who played come out with more store credit than they paid for the entry fee.
