Building up a Black Templar's Force, wondering if the Emperor's Champion unit would be allow to be used as a "Troop" Unit, BT Codex states that it doesnt have to be used as an HQ Unit, and since Black Templar's Only have the Crusader Squad as their "Troop" class, it would seem a little excessive to have 3 Tactical Marines Squads (to a degree), with the addition of some heavy weapons, Standard Bearer, Sergeant and Company Champion in the Command Squad, as i will be using 1 squad as Command Squad, 2 as Crusader Squads, even if i plan on using 1 of those Crusader Squads as a Zealous Crusader Squad, aka, full melee. Or do you think it would be better to have the 2 Crusader Squads, and the Emperor's Champion classed as an "Elite" unit.

All thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I thought he counted as an HQ unit for all intents and purposes, but just didn't take up a force organization slot?

I think you're interpreting it wrong. The Emperor's Champion counts as an HQ unit, but you're still allowed to have 2 normal HQs in addition to him.

What "Emperor's Champion unit"? A command squad? Read the codex, he cannot take a command squad, leaving you to attach him to some other type of unit, like Sword Bretheren or Crusaders. Best case, use the Accept Challenges vow, put him in a squad with close combat weapons and a flamer and run them around in a Rhino.
