I need to make some alterations to a metal unit, and im not sure what to do it with, i know the Citadel Razor Saw is suggested, and made for it, but are there any alternatives then buying that expensive tool?

If you aren't clipping anything bigger than a wrist, a clipper will do the job, along with some files. But being metal you will want to pin your jounts too, so you will either need a pin vice or a small drill like a dremel.

Probably some sort of modelling putty as well like Greenstuff as well depending on the size as larger ones may have gaps at the joints.

Generally though what snurl suggested is pretty much it. Some don't require pinning at all however (one piece models or two piece models like the normal generic SoB troops), it depends mostly on the model itself.

Files are very important.

I think a saw is a must if you want to make clean, accurate cuts.

GF9 have one that's significantly cheaper than GWs.

Safety glasses.

Clipping heads off GW metals can result in the bit going "ping!" in a random direction - it can do some damage if it hits you in the eye.

If you are going to clip metals and insist on not wearing them, then clip them in a bag, so that the bag catches the bit.

Don't buy ANY tools from GW. They are just marked up 400% with a GW label slapped on.

I actually found a small saw blade about the size of a standard xacto blade while rummaging through the garage (it fits in a blade handle just fine), and it has done wonders on metal and plastic minis. And as snurl suggested, files are a must if clipping/sawing metal minis. If you have a hobby shop near you, try looking there for a cheaper alternative to the GW product.
