Ive seen some reference to mind war taking out sergeants with powerfists etc. I did a quick search and found a thread where someone asked about mind war targeting. And the short answer was you get to pick the model to attack (thus taking out sergeant ICs etc.)
The year old thread (passive thread necromancy) http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/296118.page#1595516

So, my question is: how is this possible?
Mind war is a psycic shooting attcak, and I would need to follow ordinary targeting rules, right? I know the power say to pick a model, but with the fifth ed, "picking" a model in a unit would be prohibited by shooting rules. Just curious how the reasonong is made in this.

It isnt prohibited by the shooting rules, as Mind war provides a more specific rule - instead of picking a unit you pick a model.

THis allows you to snipe models out of units.

It's just like every other special rule which creates a specific exception to a general rule.

Mind War specifically states that it allows you to select an individual model within a unit and force that model to be the one affected; it and the Vindicare Assassin (the sniper guy) both do that. They're deliberately written to allow you to snipe the Vet Sgt or the Lascannon or whatever.

Since Mindwar specifically states that the casting player can choose the targeted model and force him to be removed, that overrides the normal rules for casualty removal.

I see, thanks for the simple answer.
I read the rules for mind war and didnt think there was any specifics about abandoning ordinary targeting. Good to know, it really makes a difference when you dont have to stick to lone models I guess its not the most utilized power anyway.

So, why bother calling it a psycic shooting attack? All the rules are listed in the power, and the shooting target rules are bypassed.
Ofcourse, me and my friends roll a BS test to see if the psycic shooting attack hit, but I still havent figured out how common this is.

Edit: by the way, "any unengaged model" is hardly "specifically states that it allows you to select an individual model within a unit" to me, but I guess its close enough. Thanks again

And to prevent the farseer from mind sniping a model in one unit and then tossing his singing spear at another unit.

Why does my eldar army run three fire prisms? Because the rules wont let me use four in (regular 40k).
