Hi, I'm bidding on some Warmachine stuff to try to get into the game. If I end up with a copy of the old rulebook, is it still usable at all? Or is the new rulebook an absolute must?

It's pretty much a must.

You can read the fluff. The old rules are similar but I think a new rulebook is essential.

Yep, the Mk. 2 rules are fairly different from Mk. 1. Well, most of it is the same, tbh, but there's some fairly substantial changes in how unit coherency and a few power attacks work, and the stats for most everything changed at least slightly.

Also, when you do get the rulebook, make sure to get the Mark II one, not Remix. That's basically the original with errata printed in it.
