Monetarily, what is the cheapest army to build? I want to see lists of the most inexpensive 1000 point armies.

No Ebay (or the like)

AoBR is ok, however each component army will be considered the full price of the box (I.E. if building an Ork army, all the ork components are worth 90 USD, and all the Space Marine components are worth 90 USD, no cross over)

All armies must be WYSIWYG.

No selling off of unused bits to counteract the price.

No building your own pieces.

Essentially, you are limited to paying full retail price from GW for your entire army.

Necron battleforce, and throw in a monilith is pretty cheap IRRC.

Heres a cheap and slowed 1k list you can make for like 290 dollars:

Necrons is just Lord + Battleforce + Monolith

CSM Battleforce + Abbadon = around 1k points and 112 dollars. I don't think it gets a lot cheaper than that.

Don't have the codex handy but the Tau battleforce is a valid army for 600 points - what's cheap and worth the extra 400? Or could you max options on the sprues to boost the PV?

Yep, Necron Battleforce with a lord attached is an entirely legal and effective (as effective as necrons can be) army.

you'd be surprised with the amount of points you can spend on wolf guard, but if your in doubt you can add a couple more wolf guard,
this build has the least amount of models possible.

The other thing is you said it would cost like $20. That isn't possible. A wolf guard box is $50. And Logan is $20. So how do you figure you can get these so cheap?

wolf guard don't have to equip terminator armor, power armor can be used and just as easily with bitz websites you can get all you need between 20 and 30$ including termi bits to model grimnar

Basically
1 termi with storm bolter and an ax
then 3 power armor marines with what ever you want

=cheapest army

The Ork player in the room is in awe.

A Warboss, two squads of Nobs, and 1 shoota boy squad should top out at around 1k.

Total cost: 140$.

i think i heard someone mention the tau battleoforce you can create an army im not sure how many points it would be

Well I'm agreeing with the Necrons, though Deathwing can be fairly cheap as well(I spent 215$ for codex+units)

The Tau Battleforce is (or rather can be) an FOC legal list. Without messing around too much, I got a list just north of 500 points, with just the battleforce. And I didn't even put any wargear on the suits or devilfish. It could probably be close to 700 points. Two Hammerheads and you are probably looking at close to 1000 points, and just shy of $200.

Tau and Necron Battleforces make for very cheap starting points for an army and it'll cost you very little to bring the points up.
Blood Angels Battleforce is good as you can (with a bit of kitbashing) make an all Death Company army from it. Again - add characters to taste.
Space Wolf Battleforce - add Logan and make them all into Wolf Guard in PA.

Yeah, this all puts imperial guard to shame. The cheapest, reasonably competitive 1k army I could come up with is about $250.

But definitely a Loganwing is the way to go. A player can easily make a 1k list out of 10 terminators and grimnar, which sets you back $120.

As to it's effectiveness, well...

= 2X 175 = 350

You've also got three leftover sanguinary guard to make into priests, other HQ's, honour guard, or just for conversions and/or bits.

I think either Necon or SM armies usually can be done pretty cheaply.
- Horde armies seems somewhat more expensive from requiring more boxes.

Just wait till the GK codex.

Apparently you can build a viable list at 1500 pts with 20 or infantry models.
