Eternal Plague

Oh the injustice!

Steelworkers won't get to see Steelers play without risking job:

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11035/1122842-28.stm

Can a Pittsburgh steelworker be sacked for missing work to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV or to nurse a Super Bowl-sized hangover the next day?

Employees of U.S. Steel's Mon Valley Works have an invitation to find out.

The steel producer this week warned workers at its Clairton, Irvin and Edgar Thomson plants, as well as the Fairless mill near Philadelphia, that anyone missing work Sunday or Monday "without just cause ... will be subject to severe disciplinary action."

The threat elicited a tongue-in-cheek response from USW International vice president Tom Conway. He called the warning "ham handed."

"I'm concerned that since [Mon Valley employee relations manager] Preston [Henderson] hails from the Philly region, he may not be as flexible and that this is just some kind of Eagles sour grapes being displayed here," Mr. Conway wrote in an e-mail to Mr. Henderson, U.S. Steel general counsel James D. Garraux and Donald C. Rizer, another employee relations executive.

The e-mail featured alternating paragraphs of black and gold type.

Mr. Conway proposed adjusting work schedules by enlisting volunteers for Super Bowl duty and making up any production lost during Sunday's 3 to 11 p.m. shift over the coming week. He also suggested a post-game party for the Sunday shift workers at U.S. Steel's training center in Duquesne, where they could watch a replay of the game.

"This would be a better approach to this weekend than your threat of SEVERE discipline ... whatever that means," Mr. Conway wrote.

U.S. Steel spokeswoman Erin DiPietro declined comment.

"We don't publicly discuss employee relations matters," she said.

It's kind of hard to comment without knowing the history. From the article it reads like management has come out really aggressively on the matter, and that's just plain bad management. There are plenty of non-aggressive ways to resolve the issue.

But then, we don't know what was going on beforehand, management might have tried a range of schemes historically and still found workers calling in sick.

The history of the thing is really important.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

When the Bears played in the Superbowl in 2007 some Chicago companies reported absence rates as high as 90%, including many white collar corporations.

I remember ordering a pizza and being told that it couldn't be delivered because only 2 of the 11 scheduled employees showed up for work.

Outsourcing has a way of killing that excuse.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

Wow, I wonder if those 9 employees retained their jobs. Superbowl Sunday and Pizza go hand in hand. That shop must have lost a lot of business!

Jewish Sabbath is on Saturday I believe.

I think the reason they can't watch the Super Bowl is because the Steelers have won 6 Super Bowls and been to three since 2003, the Bears have only won one Super Bowl so that much absenteeism is expected. Luckily I get off of work at 6:00pm so I have a nice 30 minutes to get to a T.V, wearing my jersey under my uniform though.
