Is it me, or are there some real cheesy/beardy units in the new IG codex. I mean, really, . I'm all for kickass units, and I play IG with a love that is unrivaled (try me), but some of these units I can field just seem unfair.

Hydras:
72" range, 4 twin-linked str 7 ap 4 shots, ignores skimmer/bikes cover saves from moving fast, and a few added sweet stuff... FOR 75 POINTS. Plus you can take 3 in a single heavy choice. This is insulting to opponents, especially elder, tau, dark eldar.

Veterans:
While maybe not the ultimate in cheese, COME ON. BS 4 Troop choice that can take 3 special weapons, sarge capable of a plasma pistol, all for less than a full tac squad without upgrades. Combined with transports, these guys can lay special weapons fire en mass, and score!

Vendetta:
Anyone who knows anything about IG in 5th ed knows about the vendetta. My personal favorite among the cheesy. for 130 points, you get something that can shoot 3 TL LC shots per turn, while still moving 6", and if necessary, capable of going long distances to avoid XYZ. It can carry troops, fire heavy bolter sponsons if you have spare points, and you can take 3 per FA slot. If you look in tactics, the answer to most armored opponents is "vendetta." Seriously, go look it up.

Valkyrie:
While not as OP as a Vendetta, it is still none the less an awesome unit. 12" inch movement and still able to fire all its weapons, two of which (for 30 points) are large blast, str 4 ap 6 weapons, that are defensive due to their str 4. It can carry a squad where it needs to, dropping them off while giving them cover fire like all hell. I've won several games because of this thing.

There's more in there, I just can't think of it right now. And feel free to let me know I'm wrong (in the nicest way possible), cause I'll feel better using them.

Care to point me in the direction of a non-resin hydra?

Exactly.

The vendetta is a resin conversion of a valk, and its still wildly used. Even being resin doesnt stop the hydra from seeing massive use.

Hell, converting a valk into a vendetta or a manticore into a hydra is just a matter of getting bits from HWTs or Sentinels and slapping them on.

As much as I don't want to come off as a jerk, and I apologize in advance, but welcome to 2009

And against MEQ armies are basically good only for popping Rhino's. They're a great unit, but have a hugely expensive model from Forgeworld and taking them means you aren't taking lots of big blast weapons or high strength guns, and there are some armies where they just won't do much. Not that I'm saying they aren't really good units, but probably not super cheesy either unless being used in a manner where one is tailoring a list against opponents.

Also, the Squadron rules are horrifically punitive and putzy, making them wayyyy easier to kill and much less useful in Squadrons.

Veterans:

You missed the other key points of being WS3 S3 T3 I3 A1 Ld7/8 Sv5+. Aside from being BS4 and able to take lots of weapons, these guys aren't exactly scary. While very powerful when hidden in a chimera, they are basically suicide units if used in a Valk/Vendetta and worthless when footslogging. These guys aren't any harder to kill, aren't any better in CC, and have a bunch of overcosted flavor options, and cost 40% more than a basic Infantry Squad. They're good, but they're much more limited in number and more expensive. Not that bad, only scary when used in conjunction with the Chimera.

Yes, this has been known and discussed since before the book even came out almost two years ago. Last minute hamfisted entry to sell more Valk kits (and it works )

It's hard to call this thing OP. It's good, but not really *broken*. It's got a huge visual profile making it really easy to draw range to and hard to get cover saves for if it wants to do anything other than move fast.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Well, that's what have been avoiding getting hydras in my IG company, they cost almost as much $ as points --> no thanks

But when they'll get a plastic box, well... can guess there will be a 3-squadron on every IG table, yes

I hardly think Valkyries are overpowered. They're still armor 12 vehicles that will almost never get a cover save. Vendettas are just woefully undercosted, since they pay a meager 30 points more for three twin linked lascannons. Veterans aren't overpowered, but lists full of nothing but them in chimeras with special weapons is scary.

I really don't think the IG has any Death Star units out there like some of the other codexes do. However, they can put together really scary lists.

And yeah, welcome to 2009 when IG were brand new, and people were realizing that the IG had gone from 'butt monkey of the 41st millenium' to 'OH GOD WHY ARE THERE SO MANY CHIMERAS?! D:'
