Hi folks,
Another question for the best and brightest, When figuring out movement for rage, how does one judge the distance from the closest enemy unit? By your own judgement call or by measuring? and is it legal to measure that distance?

Unless it is clear, you will have to measure.

Ya, it is very unclear as to how your to judge the distance, but in some cases people could view that as cheating.

Considering there is really no other way to adjudicate which is closer other than measuring (assuming it doesn't pass the eyeball test), you are given implicit permission to measure.
If they call it cheating, find new people to play.
If you are at a Tournament, call a judge over. Of course, talking to the TO first is always a good thing.

ask your opponent, and if you both agree which unit is closest, no point measuring. If you dont agree, let him measure...that way he cant say youre cheating!

Well I did call Games-workshop on this, But there response was somewhat troubling in regards to this, it was always measure. that being said, I am not sure I would agree with them in this case.

You are allowed to measure only when you have to do so in order to comply with a game rule, or when allowed to.
This is one of those instances where you MUST measure, otherwise you cant comply.

I don't see any reason why you wouldn't, within reason. If you've got a unit within a foot of your Rage unit, and another well over three feet away, you shouldn't need to measure to see how far the second unit is.
Any time you need to know a range, you should measure. If you're shooting a squad 12" away with a 48" gun, you are allowed to measure (although most people don't as they view it as a form of cheating). However, there is no way to determine exact range (something Rage demands at times) other than measuring, so... measure.

Ya, I can see folks abusing this is all. that is what bothers me I guess. Things like, Measure to find out the distance for something that is 18 inches away when the closest Enemy is only 6.

This came up in a game the other day. You kind of have to play it by ear. If there is an obvious choice for closest then you shouldn't have to measure. But if it's ambiguous then you will need to measure. I wouldn't say this means that you need to measure to every unit on the board as that seems like cheating, but you definitely need to figure out the actual distance of the units.
I guess in a tourney if your opponent was really butt-hurt about you measuring then you could call over the TO to do it... But that seems like a weak move to pull. Talk to your opponent about it before game and that should resolve any problems you will have
