Was just reading about Renegade Space marines today, and they don't have to fall to chaos. I quite like the idea of making some piratical/rogue marines as well.

I'm skim-reading The Book of the Astronomican (wh40k Rogue Trader supplement) just now and have found another mildly entertaining entry - I'm not posting Space Dwarves and Space Elves (even if they do have musicians) but it's interesting to see how far the 40k universe has come along since this little blurb was written:

It's interesting to see the history of the game, and where much of the inspiration for today's background was drawn from. For example, I never would have guessed that Catachan was a concept in the universe that long ago.

Both the Catachan Devil and the Catachan Face-Eater are gribblies mentioned in the very first book, wh40k Rogue Trader.

Such an awesome sense of humour in some of those entries as well:

These are the Grenades/Shells in Rogue Trader: anti-plant, blind, choke, crack-normal, crack-powerful, frag, hallucinogen, haywire, knock-out, melta-bomb, photon, plasma, pysk-out, rad, scare gas, smoke, stasis, stumm, tanglefoot,toxin gas, virus and vortex.

Man, I never would of guessed Abbadon started off as a pirate. A shame that now he's known throughout the galaxy as the guy who failed 13 times.
Poor guy.

If only I hadn't sold a load of them.

And anti-plant went with at least one unit in every game I played. Cover save? What cover?

Failed 13 times, lost his arms, can't even carry that lovely old-school lasgun any more... *sniff* what a tale of woe.

And on the subject of grenades, everyone carried about 8 of different types as well - one of the example inquisitors carried 4 virus grenades and 4 antidote-injectors. You can just imagine what'd happen to a community he didn't like...
