From here:
While the Monsterpocalypse website has remained relatively quiet since the DreamWorks movie announcement, behind the scenes has been a constant flurry of activity as Privateer Press continues to work closely with our new partners defining the future of everyone’s favorite kaiju game.

In light of the success of the Monsterpocalypse battle miniatures game two-player starter released last October, Privateer Press has decided to move Monsterpocalypse into a new non-collectible format. Privateer Press will be releasing the first follow-up, Monsterpocalypse: Dangerous Monster Zone, in summer 2011. The expansion will feature figures from classic Monsterpocalypse series for the factions introduced in the core game. The new non-random format allows collectors and players to fill out their favorite factions easily, as each box will be clearly marked with its specific faction set.

Be sure to check www.monsterpocalypse.com in the coming months for more information on this exciting release as you get ready to reach out and crush someone!

Pretty much the only thing keeping me from diving into Monsterpocalypse was the CMG format. With that gone, I have literally no reason, (none I say!) to not start buying some monster mans.

So, 'faction sets' only moving forward?

Any word on individual pieces, or will that be eBay only?

No word yet on how they're going to be doing packaging. Honestly I can see it going a few ways:

1. Faction boxes per expansion. Buy this box, get everything for the faction for that wave. Not really that bad a plan assuming the costs aren't crazy.

2. Monster/Vehicle packs. Buy this box, get the regular and the ultra/elite form. It would be a little more piecemeal this way as you could pretty much decide what you want to field and just buy that.

3. Individual blisters. I don't think this is likely simply because of how much wall space it would take up in most stores. They might do this with terrain though.

Re-releasing the old stuff in non-collectible sets is a good step forward. Releasing new, higher-quality miniatures would be a great next step.

Arcane Legions had a good system I think. You got the common stuff in boxes, and knew exactly what you were getting. Uncommon/rare stuff was mixed up in different boxes, and you didn't know exactly what you were getting, but most important, is they were still separated by faction, so you at least knew you were getting uncommon/rare stuff that you could use.

Agreed. I never liked the "you get what you get" thing many collectible games did. I dont want to buy 50 boxes/blisters or spend a fortune on ebay to get the ones I want. I want to buy them directly for a fair price.

Whats my game?
Warmachine (Cygnar)
10/15mm mecha
Song of Blades & Heroes
Blackwater Gulch
X wing
Open to other games too

Awesome news! I too bounced off of MonPoc because of the CMG format. Now I can finally play the game and use the pieces that I want, instead of the pieces that dumb luck chooses for me. Now I just need to find someone who actually wants to play the game...

Thanks, Gr3y.

There's a flip side to this.

By the time the non-collectible re-release of Series 1 happens, 1 year will have passed since the last new figure was released. This is far from a healthy game.

My guess would be that it's currently not profitable for PP to put any resources into developing the game. This is a last-ditch effort to sell old product to new people. Maybe if the sales are high enough, they'll eventually get around to making some new models, but almost certainly not this year. Or maybe they're even just trying to unload a warehouse of old stock to unsuspecting newbies before they axe the game for good.

The old meta is dead and the new meta struggles to be born. Now is the time of munchkins.

That's a step in the right direction. I think I may pick up some Cthul monsters.

I could be wrong, but I would expect a nice boost in the sales of the game is they went back and started putting out Series 1 or 2 or 3 in a non-collectible format. It would be dang near like releasing a brand new game in my area.

Most excellent.

I am glad to see the blind-buy/collectible format go the way of the do-do.

First it was Collectible card games going to a set format ala FFG's Living Card Game, and now this.

Wizkids was on the verge of doing this. Some of their most popular clix sets had non-blind buy figs.

Death to Blind-Buy! Death to Collectible games!

Or, or the market for the blind-purchase miniatures had grown sluggish, and by comparison the sales of the constructed starter set have been very promising. Heck, there's a private organization of MonPoc players that have been putting together constructed, non-blind faction starters for people and selling them online, with at least some measure of success (judging by how hard it is for them to keep some of the more popular faction/monster starters in stock). So this isn't exactly an omen of doom and gloom, more like Privateer Press responding to the writing on the wall that the CMG fad has passed.

Here's a flip side to your flip side:

Warmachine and Hordes has blown up with the MKII ruleset. Demand is outstripping production by a fair margin, and I wouldn't be terribly surprised to hear that PP has shifted everything and everyone they have to Warmahordes. They're goal the last few months probably hasn't been to meet demand so much as to minimize lost opportunity sales to new players.

Monpoc, Bodgers' games, Grind, IKRPG, all have fallen by the wayside until they can get their core product under control.

However with a Monpoc movie coming out soon they need to kickstart that game to capitalize on tie in sales. There is just no way in hell they're going to let the game die until well after the movie comes out, and if profitable, will probably keep it around as an entry level product.

Now I will probably try out and get into the game. Learned my lesson years ago with magic- no more collectable games. Either I can get the pieces for the games or not. No rares, commons, etc.....that kept me from ever trying the game.

Watched mageknight crash years ago. Not gonna jump into Monster while it was collectable.

Hope more old fools come to their senses and start giving you their money instead of those Union Jack Blood suckers...

+1

Never played it purely because it was collectible. Will look forward to it now!

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

Dunno if I'll get into the game, but I'm definitely picking up the Cthulu faction box Wonder if any of the models will work with the Arkham Horror board game, or the upcoming Mansions of Madness.

Could someone post up some pics of the models for this game? I haven't been able to find any for some reason (on the brief visit I had to a website anouncing this, or in google images).

I don't actually know what a "collectible" game is, either... but I guess I'm glad that it's not going to be one anymore, since everyone's reaction to that phrase makes it sound awful

Collectible = Blind Buy

Think magic cards, but with miniatures.

I can't wait for GW to start marketing blind buy policies for their games.

<eagerly opening a box hoping for a killa kan......damn, some more grots>

<opens another box hoping to get Lysander....damn, its a unit of Legion of the Damned, and a Cassius>

<opens box hoping to get some space marines....woohoo a whole unit of Necrons>
