I am going to start building and painting a Cadian regiment for my IG army, I read a couple tutorials and I was wondering how you guys go about painting cadians? What colors and washes?

I did mine with a basic camo setup of just 3 colours and kept the armour and helmet to a basic colour. The thing to take into account is to work out how many you are going to paint and come up with an effective scheme that you will still not be painting in 5 years time! I should have said that with camoflage I used a light base colour (fortress grey) and the three colours I used were black, white and red brown. The armour was painted with Tamiya Sea Blue which is a dark Bluegrey.

I paint my Cadians in a pretty basic scheme that's very close to the GW scheme:

Cloth is Dheneb Stone with Gryphonne Sepia wash, armor is Catachan Green with Camo Green highlights, metal is Boltgun Metal with a Badab Black wash, skin is Dwarf or Tallarn Flesh with Ogryn Flesh wash, eagles and the like are greys built up to white. Super simple.

Awesome, thanks for the help. I wanted to move away from the official GW color scheme for my cadians but I have NO painting skill what so ever so I wouldn't even know what colors would work well and what wouldn't, or even how to make them look presentable.

Heh.

I'm working on doing mine with a light olive-grey body armor color, olive drab fatigues and black boots/packs.

Cadian models have a DECEPTIVE amount of detail on them. If you're going for a complicated scheme (like I do), it can take a surprisingly long time to paint them.

It's more common for people to paint cadians in such a way where they base coat it and then wash it. This makes it so that once they're done picking out the hands, faces, belt items, etc. that you don't wind up spending too much time per model while still getting some details.

Remember, you're going to have to paint at LEAST like 40 of these guys, and if you're a foot guard commander, that figure will quickly rise into the triple digits. Having a model that takes too long to paint can be a pain.

Or you could just do what you want, and wind up being a masochist. Either way.

Well I would like to build a "ghost" army so to speak and use different shades of grey to paint the armor but have no freaking idea how I would go about doing it. LOL. I am actually reading How to Paint Citadel Miniatures books to learn about painting.

Yeah, what kind of ghost?

If we're talking like Return of the King ghost, that's probably spray prime grey, paint everything but the deepest recesses in some sort of green, wash the whole thing in blue, and then lightly drybrush the whole model in some sort of very light blue or very light green, depending on which of those colors you'd like to emphasize.

It would be pretty quick to do as well, while being pretty easy, I'd think.

Unless, yeah, you're talking more like about a Starcraft Ghost, or a Ghost in the Shell Ghost, or a Holy Ghost (that would be a tough one).

Although, you win a million internet points if you paint up your army to look like Bill Cosby, a la Ghost Dad

I was thinking something like this:

Yeah. SC's Ghosts make a terrible color scheme for Guardsmen, simply because their armor parts don't really 'match up' if that makes sense.

Can you use the colors and make them work? Yeah.
But they won't make you really think "Oooh! Ghost!".

Well I was either thinking that or an all grey armor for them, give them like a ghostly appearance.
