So I was thinking about setting up an army list where you have a very solid firebase from Longfangs and razorbacks at the back of the board and then the main assault comes purely from drop pods.

I would like to hear your thoughts on whether this could work at 1500 points and strengths/weaknesses.

...And you shall know us by the trail of dead.

At that point costs you are talking about 1 dreadnought in a drop pod with what youb sugest. I would hardly call that the main assault force.

Here you can se my atemt at 1750. If you want to use it I would sugest droping the cyclone missile launcher, downsice the TDA and skip the melta suecide pod (I am currently not happy about it.)

I've been running something along these lines at 1750. The GH drop squads are pretty resistant against all but the nastiest assault/firepower. Dropping a few things here and there (maybe a whole long fang squad and razorback) should get you to 1500 pretty easily while keeping the general list theme.

Rune priest, JotWW, living lightning, chooser of the slain

4 WG with combi-meltas, 1 WG with combi-melta, powerfist (to GH squad), drop pod

3 WG with combi-melta, 1 WG with combi-flamer, powerfist (to GH squad), drop pod

8 GH with melta, standard, power weapon, MotW, in a drop pod

8 GH with flamer, standard, power weapon, MotW, in a drop pod

5 GH, flamer, in LC/PG razorback

5 GH, flamer, in LC/PG razorback

6 long fangs, 5 ML in LC/PG razorback

6 long fangs, 5 ML in LC/PG razorback

5 long fangs, 4 ML in LC/PG razorback

Overall, it’s been pretty successful. The drop units certainly make a mess of things and tie up a large amount of the enemy army, but they rarely survive the whole game against well-built opponents, so they don’t often claim distant objectives. They do kill enemy heavy support and troops easily, so my opponents don’t usually get credit for their close objectives and my firebase gets to go to work unmolested most games. The fire support part of my army is robust enough that most opponents don’t want to reserve against me to avoid the drop, and if they do I have options (empty razorbacks to move WG squads, for example). The two troops in razorbacks let me roll forward and claim close objectives and screen my longfangs somewhat.
