Question 1) Will washes (GWs and homemade stuff like Les') work properly if I use a primer as a one shot primer/basecoat combo?

Question 2) If I spray prime, then spray basecoat with another paint, how well does this work? I've heard of army painter spray paints, has anyone used them? How well do they work?

I'm about to try this on some terrain I'm working on today. I got lucky and got some red oxide colored primer, so it will be a good test on how well it works.

This is just regular Ace brand hardware store primer.

That's what I do with my tyranids. Prime/basecoat with an almond colored primer, brush on the carapace color, and then wash the entire figure with raw umber wash. You should do a test figure first though, a lot of washes will not adhere well to some spray primers (e.g., will bead)

A galaxy far far away

Washes work fine, I use Army Painter Navy, followed by a Asurman Blue wash. Add blocking colours on to that and detail. Marines are done in no time.

Hey bro,

I sprayed these guys directly with Krylon green ($0.99) no priming. Did a smidge of detailing and dipped. I did the whole AoBR Marine Set in 8 hours as a challenge to myself. Plus I was SICK of painting Ork Boyz!

All my Tyranids are done with spray primer plus several spray colours on top.

A bit of detail painting by brush, then on with the Quickshade. Finish with spray matt varnish.

Bingo!

Nothing wrong with spraying a basecoat...even GW used to (maybe still do?) offer a few colors in spray cans. It was mostly SM colors IIRC.
