I'm thinking of building a modular table at my house, since my time is a bit sporadic lately and having a table handy means a greater likelihood of random games with my girlfriend or even against myself (it's not as sad as it sounds). I was just curious as to what size most of you play on? In the past, I've done 4x8, 3x6, 4x6, and even 4x4 for the small-scale battles, skirmish scenarios, or underrated games like Mordheim (<3).

Generally speaking, the average fantasy battle in the house would either be 1500 or 2000 points, and almost never larger than 2500. I'm looking for something small enough that you get stuck in early on, but not so cramped that you're charging on turn one and that deployment is just a matter of cramming units right next to each other for want of space. It'll also be used for 40K, but size there is not as much of an issue since movement isn't as big a deal as, say, shooting is so I'm using WHFB as my measuring stick.

6'x4' is pretty standard, 2000pts fits comfortably on there with room to spare. up to 3000pts will fit pretty well on there too, but it might get a bit snug depending on the terrain you have set up

Malifaux - Rezzers
The Other Side - King's Empire & Abysinnia
40K - Iron Hands

6x4 is pretty much the standard, although I built my table to 8x4 figuring if I want to play on 6x4 I just mark a 2 foot bit on either end (or 1 foot on both ends). Gives players a space to put models out before deploying and such.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

in general 6x4.

if you want to be modular, do what GW did with the Realm of Battle board and make a bunch of 2x2 squares. you can then make any size you want.
