Alright, i know this could easily spiral into a flame war. i ask, no beg, please keep this civil
and as on topic as the OT gods will permit.

My question.
will they be able to hold it together and actually get something done?
Or will they fracture from the pressure of so many pulls in so many directions?

2 reasons that brought me to this question:

http://www.politicsdaily.com/2011/02/07/glenn-beck-hits-back-at-bill-kristol-over-weekly-standard-column/

it seems like the Tea party, the Neocons, the Gop(old school, not ultraright), Right wing Christian groups, etc...
could make a powerful block. unless they do as the Dems usually do and form the "circular firing squad". and it seems
that the cracks could have started.

what do the masses think?

Considering that I thought that said "Necrons"

I think I play too much 40k, and should most likely go to bed.

Honestly though, I don't know what getting "something done" is supposed to mean. I'm sure they'll do their best to stall anything Obama wants to accomplish until 2012 when they can hopefully (for their sakes) get a Republican president in the White House. That's usually the way it works.

^Pretty much what he said. I don't see them breaking up personally. There are different people in the party for sure, but they will probably just stay together and stall stuff.

(THIS SPACE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK)

The closest they're going to have come to fracturing already occurred when the Christian coalition broke up. Now they're just going to lose people over time to moderate or independent candidates because mainstream conservatism has gone flying rodent gak stupid. They figured out they could appeal to the extreme fringes post 9/11, but thats not a strategy you can maintain forever and theres a point at which they're going to drive out their loyalists.

Do you remember that time that thing happened?

They'll stay together and do what they do best: nothing.

They'll stall the democrats who are actually doing something until they can't do gak anymore.

So, slowly over attrition? no major problems at the moment. i can see that. it just seems that GB and Mr. Kristol floated outside of each
others "bubbles" for the longest time, still on the same side. for him to go out of his way to call him out on it, instead of ignoring
it just gave him more fuel to his fire, imho.

The moment you said Neocons this thread became irrelevant.

Don't listen to Fraz, he wants to pretend that Libertarians matter.

Neocons are more important than they are, but less important that religious conservatives; meaning that the GOP has a hilarious fight on its hands. One that will be won by religious conservatives, if polls are to be believed.

Which is good, as that's how it's supposed to work: Both parties bringing different things to the table, and they both keep eachother in line.

In your base, ignoring your logic.

In politcal history the bonds between Republican politicians is usually stronger than the bonds between Democratic politicians, even so I see the Republican party turning into two tightly knit parties.

Says you. and thanks for the contribution....
I wasn't saying the term "Neocon" in a negative way. i'm trying to include any and all that might call themselves Republican.

To split there needs to be greater political advantage in leaving than there would be by staying together. The US system does not treat minor parties well, about the best they can do is hope to score enough votes to get a major party to decide it wants a piece of that, and start playing to those voters itself.

A party would have to be incredibly mishandled to actually split. I mean, look at how the Republicans have treated the Libertarians in the last couple of decades, and despite all that they're still there, still thinking that this new congress is going to be the one that really follows through on all those things they promised the Libertarians.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I think Tim Pawlenty will get the GOP nomination.

Not saying he's best, not saying I like the dude at all (I’m way too liberal for that) but I see him as the most electable candidate the republican party can put forward.

See, i'd guess Mitt Romney would. but then again he's got the whole health care past, so you might be right...

Tim Pawlenty screwed up my state bad. Don't vote for him. because he refused to raise taxes whatsoever, he cut many key services (elderly care and medical help for the mentally disabled) while advocating for a new stadium. Who needs a new home more, the Vikings or the homeless?

On topic, I think that the Tea Party would have trouble gaining enough votes and would merely hinder and divide the Republican Party if they split off, similar to the Bull Moose Party.

I see three factions in the republican voting mass that just happen to get along for political purposes, but don't need to have anything to do with each other.

Broken down into stereotypes, you have your Lexus driving big banking stock owning property owing (and possible renting for profit just as another business venture like my last slumlord landlady) expensive vacation taking suburbanite with a good white collar job/inherited portfolio who doesn't want to pay as much taxes on his large income. Fair enough. Smart actually. If you got it, you want to keep it. Smart but selfish, and shortsighted in thinking that them having the biggest piece of the pie is anything more than an illusion of playing the current system well. They want to maintain an unsustainable social order they prosper in, but don't want to see that their taxes are needed to maintain that status quo.

Completely unrelated but also republican are bible thumping abortion clinic hating republicans for jesus who will vote for whichever candidate their abortion hating gay hating congregation does.

These often going hand in hand with hating immigrants, loving guns, and paranoia about the government retsricting their freedom any time they hear about any new policy which might take away their right to own a bg peni.. er.. gun.

So there's three overlapping factions in what can be called the republicans: the selfish, the delusional, and the paranoid. Why not split them off into their special interest groups? We could call it the Tea Party so it doesn't sound so R/L partisan but somehow I don't think anyone was fooled but the teabaggers.

Edit: before I get accused of being anti-republican get me started on the Utne-Reader Philharmonic ticketholder dems, the naive legalization/eco-friendly lesbo college kid whos parents pay for it dems, and the hate-the-white-man party dems too. Their stereotypes are just as despicable.
